An escapee from the Talbert House Community Correctional Center in Turtlecreek Township tied up two women, stole their car, then terrorized motorists on Interstate 71 Friday afternoon as he crashed into several vehicles in a futile attempt to elude police who were chasing him.

Adam E. Carpenter, 20, of New Richmond, broke into a home near the center, tied the owner and her sister to chairs and took their car, said the Warren County Sheriff's Department. He also took a shotgun he found in the home.

Neither woman was injured.

Police began pursuing him about 3:25 p.m. after off-duty Hamilton Township police officer Lisa Elliot spotted a white Chevrolet Trailblazer that Carpenter had taken half an hour earlier.

Police chased the SUV south on I-71 from near Kings Island into Hamilton County, attempting unsuccessfully several times to pull him over.

They deflated his tires with stop sticks near the Fields Ertel exit, but he drove on another three miles on the rims, smashing into at least five vehicles on southbound I-71 before the SUV stalled on the Montgomery Road exit ramp in Sycamore Township, police said.

None of the other motorists was seriously injured in the crashes, police said.

Carpenter climbed out of the disabled vehicle, hands held high, and three officers with guns drawn quickly surrounded him. An Artimis camera on the highway captured the scene.

Deputies said they used a Taser on Carpenter when he failed to comply with verbal commands while being handcuffed. He was taken to University Hospital after complaining of chest pains.

Carpenter was released from the hospital and was taken to the Warren County Jail, charged with aggravated robbery. Police said they expect to file additional charges.

He was sentenced to the Turtlecreek penal facility in March from Clermont County on multiple theft charges.
