....go through http://www.learnatest.com. Not only do you get the awesome book but you get to have a mock essay graded by a REAL person. I NAILED the written test and it was due primarily to this book and online test!!!

Does the CHP study guide give examples that corelate to the real test? I was looking the study guide over and it seemed like the test are not somthing you can really study for. Maybe this is because I just took a collge course in writing, but I think the study guide the CHP give you has some good examples of what to do, and what not to do.

For those of you that have already taken the test, I am on track?

took the test on sat. and i think that the CHP study guide is a very good example of what you will see when you take the test. i think to a certain extent you either know it or you don't. Good vocabulary and spelling skills will help you more then anything. The essay is like anything else you should ever wright, have an intro, body, and conclusion; use complete sentences and proper spelling. i don't have my results yet, but i think i really did good!

I took the written on Saturday too, and I'm pretty confident I passed. As mentioned on other threads, The Complete Preparation Guide, State Police Exam, California by Learning Express works well as a study guide. Completing the practice tests help build confidence, but its chapter on essay writing is crap, IMO. The written was just like taking the SATs in high school... Basic English comprehension, spelling and grammar.

The most "challenging" part of the test was having to write a timed essay from scratch. If one's having trouble with the written, then my personal recommendation would be to enroll in an English course at a community college, and also take advantage of all their on-campus resources. I just finished a tough English class last semester, where 10 page essays every couple of weeks was the norm, so I was prepared for that aspect of the test.
