I have got a call for the June Academy but felt it was to close. I am trying to get ready for the October start. My family and I don't live in California so I will have to find a place for them before I start.

I looked and had difficultly finding the address for the academy so I could find something close. But I was wondering if the area around the academy is reasonable place for a family? I had a friend suggest Vacaville because it is only about 45 minutes from Sacramento.

Are there areas of Sac that I want to avoid?

Are there areas that someone could suggest over others?

I guess I just was wanting some opinions. Thanks.

Hey, there are some reasonably priced apartments just outside the sacramento area. About 10 min from the academy there is an alright area with nice new apartments with a few big grocery stores and some other shops close by. This is the Natomas area...one half is new and nice and the other is kinda ghetto.

Roseville is a really good place to call home. Reasonably prices appts and homes with shopping centers, malls, shops, and all kinds of restaurants and other things to do. I would check that out first. only about a 20 min drive on the freeway from the academy. Just east of sacramento on I-80. Vacaville is going to be too far especially with traffic and stuff. you can find a nice place closer.

I agree Roseville would be a better choice than Vacaville. You might also look at Elk Grove. The academy address is 3500 Reed Ave. in West Sacramento.

I agree with PiP. I live in roseville and it is a great place for family. In the morning commute it can take close to 30 - 35 min. to get to the acadamy but during none commute time it only takes around 20 min. One thing that I like about Roseville is the police department. I've seen as many as 5-7 units respond to a noise complaint on a friday night. I've had the pleasure of calling the Sacramento S.O. on a friday night when a knife was pulled on a friend of mine at a party that I was at. The perp told us he was going to come back with the "sacramaniacs" a known gang in the sac. area. I informed the S.O. dispatcher of this after waiting about 7 min. on hold. After about an hour and a half later still no S.O. and the perp is back with friends. Kicks in the front door but does not enter the house and breaks the front bay window to the house. An hour after that here comes the sac. county sherriff. We give him the perp's name and address and he goes to his house and has a chat with him. He calls us back and informs us that he told the perp to stay inside the rest of the night and assures us that he will. If this would have happened in roseville the perp would have at least been cuffed and booked, and we would have not had to wait all night for R.P.D. to show up. The security of Roseville, Rocklin, Granite Bay is that of none others in the Sacramento area. However there is brand new $600,000 houses with a front porch view of HWY 99 in the nicer newer part of Natomas that borders one of the worst neighborhoods in the Sac area. My girlfriend and I lived in an appartment on a golf course in roseville and only paid $995 for a two bedroom with washer and dryer, and a garage in a gated complex. Plus Roseville electric is cheaper than that of Pg&e and SMUD.

Carmichael, Fair Oaks, most of Antelope, most of Citrus Heights, Folsom, North Natomas, Roseville, Rocklin, Elk Grove/ Laguna, East Sacramento, the South of I-50 part of West Sacramento, Pocket and Land Park Areas of Sacramento, Davis our great areas to live in. Places to avoid if you can, Rio Linda, North Highlands, Oak Park, Florin area, the West side of downtown Sacramento, the North Side of West Sacramento.

Map of the sacramento area with most of the names listed above. The academy on that map is just north of where it says West Sacramento on I-80 http://www.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=Sacramento,+CA,+USA&ie=UTF8&om=1&ll=38.632964,-121.490936&spn=0.497761,0.903625&z=10

I moved my family to an apartment in West Sacramento for the Academy--not a very nice place, but it's only temporary. If you live near the Academy, be prepared to have some trashy neighbors, and don't expect to take a leisurely 10 PM stroll through the neighborhood. But, hey, if you're like us, and aren't used to a super-safe, beautiful neighborhood, West Sac was a great place to live for 27 weeks and 4 days, and we have plenty of fond memories of it. We stayed at the Sunset Village apartments on Madrone Ave. There's plenty of laundry facilities (and a laundr-o-mat nearby, if you don't want your clothes stolen), a Ralphs, and a Blockbuster within walking distance. While many of our neighbors were on a different track in life (unemployed, on welfare, etc.), we forged some friendly relationships with some nice people while we were there, and we wouldn't have done it any other way. :-)

I second RA's advice on areas...I grew up in Sacramento and that is pretty accurate...BUT some parts of Elk Grove are just South-South Sac...and that should be avoided. (Why did they have to connect it all, why not a wall or fence?)

You should know that the Academy is 6 months long and after that you will PROBABLY be going to the San Francisco Bay Area or to the Los Angeles Area. If you could wait until you get your assignment, it may make things a little smoother for you and the family. First, you don't have to pull them out of the comfort zone they are in right now...and you can concentrate on Academy stuff. You won't need to worry about the commute since you will be living at the Academy 5 days out of the week. If you lived in the aforementioned areas, you could theoretically zip home on Wednesday night for dinner...but then have to be right back. I lived 2 hours from the Academy and only made the trip on weekends.

...and I don't want to be a naysayer...but if you move your family and then decide this isn't for you...it is going to be very wasteful to move back...

My sister lived in Natomas right across from Arco Arena and it was safe and close to everything (less than one mile to WalMart, HomeDepot, Chili's, etc, etc)

just some thoughts. Best of Luck!

I have lived in several places around sacramento and I think a nice place near the academy would be all the apartment complexes around and near Arco Arena (Natomas). I lived off of Arena Blvd in a place call Irongate a few years back and found it very nice. Now it is much more developed with a supermarket and shopping center right across the street. Hope this helps!

LOL! Yeah I grew up in Elk Grove before there was ever a "Laguna" side, but yeah the only not so great part of Elk Grove is the very north area of it. Its so different now, I barely recognize Elk Grove as Elk Grove now.
