Does the CHP have manditory overtime (which of course is a no brainer with everything that can happen and you have to stay past your regular shift) but having to stay because there's not enough bodies for the next shift and your up to stay over because of seniority or what? Anybody care to elaborate? I know CDCR does this and I'm not talking every once in awhile, like once or twice a week and it can be exhausting.

Mandatory OT,
Do we have it? ... Yes

Is it used often, really depends on the office but once in a while the junior guy has to stay over 4 to help cover another shift that may be short for some reason. (unless someone volunteers first) This, at least in my office, doesn't happen often. We have a few (2-3 month) times when we ask for a volunteer to hold over, but it usually gets filled right away.

As for emergency incidents, riots, large fires that require road control, terror threats...etc. Then yes stand by for mandatory shifts and OT. As far as the state goes the last time I can remember the whole state going to mandatory OT was during the start up of the Iraq war.

Is there overtime during your "break-in" stage? Or you have to wait until your "Break-in" is over?

Most offices if not all won't let you do OT while on break in unless it happens to be somehting you got into at toward the end of shift. While on break in you have plenty to keep you busy and stressed. As for the Mandatory part if the offcie is on Mandatory OT for some sort of incident then I would GUESS ..YES you have to stay, your an extra body. But to cover a shift for someone who called in sick, probably not.

Perhaps it was because you already appear to have cut off your hands, feet and hair?

Carcop mybe we are related. My Mother always told me to play on the freeway. Little did she know that would eventually land me in the hiring process for the CHP.

Along the lines of this thread, does the CHP do construction details? - I'm in the east coast and it seems that every "State Police" agency (meaning Mass State Police, Rhode Island and I think I even saw a Connecticut one) does details at highway construction projects (off/on ramps, etc).

Cheers

Yes, we do. It is overtime, a unit is not taken from the beat to fill the spots.

And before some "concerned citizen" asks. . .The money doesn't come from the CHP budget, it comes from CALTRANS' budget.
