LITCHFIELD, Conn. — A 38-year-old Winsted man who wanted to be state trooper has been charged with sexual assault after allegedly admitting during a state police job interview that he molested a young girl several years ago.
Jon Van Allen was arraigned in Bantam Superior Court on Wednesday on charges of first-degree sexual assault, fourth-degree sexual assault and two counts of risk of injury to a minor.
Van Allen told investigators a friend had told him that if he was honest about everything, he was most likely to pass the state police exam, according to an arrest warrant.
Van Allen, who was being interviewed as a possible state police recruit last month, admitted that seven years ago he had fondled a 6-year-old girl twice.
After the admission during the job interview, Van Allen was suspended from his janitor’s job for the Region 7 school district which serves students from Barkhamsted, Colebrook, New Hartford and Norfolk.
According to the arrest warrant, Van Allen told investigators that in 2000, he was living in a home in Barkhamsted. One day, he arrived at the home from his job as a recruiter for the Marines and found the girl asleep on the couch and he placed his hands in her underwear, according to the warrant. He told investigators that two weeks after the first fondling incident, he did it again under similar circumstances.
The former recruiter told detectives that after the second incident he said to himself, “You’re going too far, stop.”
The alleged victim, now 13, lives in California and has no recollection of the fondling incidents, police said.
Bantam Superior Court Judge Richard M. Marano on Wednesday set Van Allen’s bond at $50,000 His case was transferred and continued until May 1 in Litchfield Superior Court.
