(CBS13) RIPON, Calif. It was a frantic scene in Ripon Tuesday as Police tried to save the life of another officer who was involved in an ATV accident. The officer was patrolling along the Stanislaus River at Parallel Avenue and Reynolds Avenue when the accident occured.

57-year-old officer Bob Winget was a three-year veteran of the department. He was found by a fellow officer and taken to paramedics at around 1:30 p.m. He was pronounced dead on the way to the hospital.

Police say they last heard from Winget around 11:40 a.m.

“We received a transmission from the officer. It was the last communication we heard from him,” said Sgt. Ed Ormonde, Ripon Police Department. Ormonde was visibly shaken.

Officers at the scene of the rescue refused to comment on the victim’s condition. In fact, they tried shield our cameras as rescuers tried to revive the officer.

“Turn it off now! Turn it off and get the hell out of here. Have some respect. Get out!” said one identified officer. “I will take you to jail; I promise you."

"Get out,” said another unidentified officer. “Go away. Have some respect for the dead, go away."

Winget was a Marine Corps veteran and has served in law enforcement for approximately 37 years. LAPD, Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office and a 3 year member of the Ripon Police Department.

Winget is survived by his wife and a son 35 years of age, and 3 daughters, 23, 19 16 years of age.

Man, that's unfortunate.

Those ATV's are fun, and a good tool, but they leave much to be desired in the safety department.
It's also unfortunate that both news crew and officers on scene lost a little perspective during the event. quite disturbing is that the exchange between them was published as newsworthy.

The media can be some what heartless in situations like this. When I was a senior in high school a friend of mine was killed in a motorcycle wreck and the media would not give him or his family the respect of not publishing pictures of his body (Mostly covered with exception to his arm) in the newspaper. It may not seem like a big deal ,but seeing that picture still bothers me to this day.

May officer Winget Rest In peace. My prayers go out to his family.
