Question about K-9 Units.

I had a question that hopefully can be answered and I do apologize if this is a repeated post.

What would be the requirements to join the K-9 patrol unit?

I know that openings are rare and vary by office, but do you have to have previous experience as a dog handler or are you taught how to be a handler?
