Police: 9-Month-Old Baby Ejected From Car During High Speed Chase in Texas, Killing Her

Saturday, April 07, 2007

ALVARADO, Texas — A woman led police on a 25-mile high speed chase (javascript:siteSearch('high speed chase');) until she crashed into a concrete median, killing her 9-month-old daughter in the collision, authorities said.
Alexxus Riza was thrown Friday night from the SUV, which rolled several times under an Interstate 35 overpass, said Trooper Dub Gillum of the Texas Department of Public Safety.
Amy Riza (javascript:siteSearch('Amy Riza');), 37, of Keene, sustained minor injuries and was charged with manslaughter, evading arrest, resisting arrest and reckless driving, Gillum said.
"She was combative after the crash when they tried to extract her out of the vehicle," he said. "The officers had to wrestle her to get her under control."
A motorist had called the Somervell County Sheriff's Department to report a reckless driver. When Riza refused to stop, authorities chased her through two counties at speeds up to 110 mph, Gillum said.
Authorities used spikes, tried to block intersections ahead and backed off the SUV hoping it would slow down. But Riza continued to drive until she crashed, traveling on the rims after the SUV's tires were deflated, Gillum said.

It's a real shame that she had the audacity to put her child's life in danger like that. Her real punishment will be knowing that she could have prevented her child from dying by just pulling over, to me that is a far worse penalty than any prison term she will be given.

Nicely put. I think it is very sad there are such desperate people in the world like this.

Do you really think she cared she could have prevented this by stopping? The only thing she likely regrets is that she was caught. I say let her rot in prison where she'll have plenty of time to consider her idiotic actions.

I don't see how she could not feel any sorrow for killing her child (but there are some crazy people out there). I agree with you that most likely her only real regret was being caught. But I hope that along with rotting where she belongs that she has the anguish of knowing what the real tragedy was and that it could have been easily prevented. Not to mention what her family is going through.

I have been reading your posts and some of them have cracked me up  Reading the story makes me feel sorry not for the mom (granted she should have stopped no questions.) However, my heart goes out to the officers and others who were involved. I have much respect for those who put their lives out there every day. but when you hear of people who take chances with others lives, especially small children, I don't see how something like this doesn't affect more personally.

how do you deal with things that go wrong and there are small children involved? I would personally want to get out of my car and just beat the holy hell out of them. Not an officer as you can tell but have always wondered.
