THE SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE (California)

Someone left a bomb under a police car parked outside a Santa Cruz officer's home early Saturday morning, a crime that has shocked and puzzled police and federal agents.

The unidentified officer found the explosive device at about 8 a.m. underneath the black-and-white Santa Cruz patrol car parked in the officer's driveway, said police spokesman Zach Friend.

The Santa Cruz County Sheriff's bomb squad dismantled the bomb, which had been lit but did not detonate, Friend said.

It was not clear whether the officer had been specifically targeted or the assailant simply targeted the car.

The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the FBI have joined Santa Cruz police in the investigation.

"I want to emphasize that this is a very personal and direct attack," Friend said.

"This occurred at the officer's home under a marked vehicle. It's one thing if it happens on a street or out in a public area. It crosses a completely different threshold and a completely different line."

The officer, a 10-year veteran permitted to take a patrol car home, parked the vehicle at about 3 a.m. Saturday after returning home from work, Friend said.

None of the department's 85 employees has reported being threatened, Friend said.

Officers are being asked if they have arrested anyone who might hold a personal grudge, he said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Santa Cruz police investigations at (831) 420-5820 or an anonymous tip line at (831) 420-5995.

Very shocking and way-to-go for the officer in finding the bomb during his pre-ride checklist/inspection.

For this reason, being targeted at an officers residence, I feel uneasy whenever I see a marked patrol car at a residence.

And for this scumbag, I truly hope he is found, prosecuted, and determined guilty for attempted murder on a peace officer.

This part is a little odd. Pretty crude device if it just had a fuse that required fire. Not to belittle the offense or anything, but the way newspapers report a handgun, rifle, and shotgun found in a searched home as an arms cache, this bomb could have been a firecracker.

Come on guys, don't be surprised. We're talking about Santa Cruz here.

The only county in the state where a CHP memorial sign can be sawed down not once but twice with a stolen cross and flag to boot all done in broad daylight with "no witnesses".

I think we're also known as the only County that had public officials dispensing weed for free, we were also first to be nuclear free, and are such a hippyopolis that they couldn't form a consensus to keep "Surf City USA" from being taken by a southern california city.

About the bomb, the $800,000 2 bedroom fixer-upper that the canine officer lives in didn't have a garage big enough for her cruiser. It's the same area thats made the news for the roving bands of "@)#$&"'s who vandalize SUV's. If you know the area, near the statue of the Duke and the surf museum.

Why stay you ask......it's like fishing in a stocked pond.

p.s. I think the ayatolloh hippy bindola has a home here too.

I think that's out of line,

You know nothing of me. I most certainly do not subscribe to drug use or anarchist type behavior. I don't know how you could come up with that ridiculous assumption. I work hard for my community and my country, and also support law enforcement.
I live in Sacramento by the way.

And what led any of you to believe that I would find myself in good company among proponents of legalized weed, vandals, and cop haters?

It was a joke, if you can't laugh at yourself than everyone else will. Sorry if I inferred that you were a dope smoking hippy.

Well, sorry for the mis-diagnosis,

I'll laugh with you then.

What I still don't get is what this bomb actually was. A cherry bomb? A pipe bomb?

Due to the ongoing investigation, I can't tell you what it was. I can say that it was a bomb, and had it successfully detonated it would have taken out their house.
