Its different with each applicant. I noticed the invites start going out around one or two months prior to the start of the academy. I had my medical in mid January-2007 B.C. Still waiting for the oral psych...Should be any time now. Patients patients patients…..

I am hoping to get into this next academy...
The only thing I got pending is my medical; I have an eye exam on Tuesday in Fullerton and from what I understand, once I pass that I should be all cleared.
I talked to an officer from C.H.U. and he said they have not sent out any invites yet; they are barely recovering from all the paperwork from CTC I-07.

I still want to know how they are going to fit 240 cadets in one classroom.
Actually, they took Classroom 5 and ripped out the wall, making it one with the adjoining classroom, so there'll be PLENTY of room for the new cadets
Plus, as I remember it, cadets seem to make enough room when they're lined up nose to neck (there's a more colorful term they used at the Academy, but that'll do as a descriptor).

The State usually sends out invites by singing telegram:
(Imagine Chippy the Chipmunk standing on your doorstep, dancing with his campaign hat on.)
Congratulations, you've made it through,
Somehow, you weren't DQ'ed,
Move up to Sac-town--and have some fun!
You're kinda nasty--we'll make you run,
We'll make your life a living heck,
Don't set your bag down on my deck!
You'd better shave your hippy hair,
Don't show your tats, or you'll despair!
Just shut your mouth and work real hard,
Because you're mostly made of lard!
If you don't quit, after 27 weeks,
You'll be the best: The CHP!
But, for those who the State thinks will likely quit before week 10, they just send a packet with an invite and a bunch of information. Let's hope you get the singing Chippy. If Chippy isn't available, I think DW, YM, or Mac make personal calls to each successful applicant.

1mth down for CTC 1-07 yay. If you're anticipating June 18th I recommend you do as my cadet's BI recommended & have about a $1000 in the bank. We set up a seperate account we call the "CHP account". Between academy prep & actual expenses while in the academy I'd say we spent about that. As a married couple that has saved us some grief. You only get ph calls plus who wants to bother w/finance talk when all you want to do is hear each others voice. Talk about all the" What ifs?" too meaning if grandpa get sicks or if someone we love dies what should we do kind of stuff. We did & were pretty much on the same page. Basically he'll leave campus on liberty ,to be a pallbearer (god forbid & only if it's ok by staff officers), & OCTOBER 5TH BABY! Sorry I'm a little bit of a hardass too so quitting is not an option & anyone who gives him an out to quit knows they better be prepared to let him move in. :) This is serious stuff & no one wants to start academy all over. Best wishes to the next class of cadets Ctc 2-07

Excellent post rayni. Helpful and does not call attention to ones self like a you tube type posting of "watch me go through the academy" does. Just the sort of thing a young married couple might pick up on and save them some headaches as they approach this very serious business of a career and life changing process.
Good luck to all current and future cadets and their loved ones.

I guess we can both hope that it isn't a FedX envelope or else we may never get it. Stick with the guys in brown. We will get it there and always dust off the shoe prints from the pkg before we deliver. Thats the inside scoop. :tape: LOL

rs, congrats on invite to bad you didn't get the singing chipmunk 23112 posted about. :) anyhow USPS only version of overnight (1-2 dy guranteed) is "Express mail" & has to be signed for. There are mail processing plants in sacramento & san francisco running 24/7 so it usually only takes a day turnover for first class mail. My cadet received his invite via our doorstep manilla envelope 2 1/2 wks before academy started. Remember the first 3 wks are the hardest can not express that enough. That's when you want to quit, but don't do it. Go in there knowing there is a method to the madness & after 6 mths you'll never have to do it again. My cadet is doing fine & when you guys/girls get there we'll be close to the 1/2 way mark. My husband can't thank some of his buddies in CHP enough after understanding that all them endured the academy & EARNED Their spot as an officer.

Congrats. I just finished my medical last thursday and psych last friday. (Moving me very fast!) If I get invited, it will be a desperate invite. Everyone's telling me if I get invited, it will be the Friday.
If for some odd and mysterious reason I get invited early into June, then I don't know if I will take it merely for the fact of running. I've taken this week off due to an ankle injury and I did not want to make it worse.
I might waive, but I might not just because I can be in a black and white quicker. I don't quit for anything. I just don't. I can be tempted, but I won't go through with it. But if I can have my life a smidge easier due to the running training, then I will.
Great job RA. Now don't quit!

Not at all. From what they told me, they understand that they are not giving you enough time to get your affairs in order if they are giving you two weeks. There are just some people who dont have bills, families, properties, etc who can go on short notice.
I could, but running wise, I'm not there yet.

You can waive, but the paperwork that came today says that you are put at the bottom of the list. So if you waive you arent guranteed a spot in the next accademy. Thought about doing that as well, its not the running but the pushups and pullups that worry me. But I am going in this June and I know the PT is gonna be a terrible time, but I am going to finish this and will not quit. The only way I am going home is if I am forced to do so! And I will work my rear end off to make sure that doesnt happen.

Actually, anyone can waive for any reason but the third offer that is made must be accepted or then you must start all over again.
If you are not ready now because of running odds are you may never feel totally ready. But that's ok because a majority of cadets are not totally prepared for the entirety of the Academy. Understand that at some point you are going to have to accept that you are as ready as you'll ever be and jump in. Even then, it's not going to be easy. Just ask the 31 folks who have already resigned from CTC I-07.

But that is a good sign for me I guess, because the only thing I had to do with the medical reviewer was the EKG treadmill, and my Doctor said I was perfect. So I turned that in, and just waiting for the final word!

I have an idea. How about everyone who hasn't received an invitation call CHU to ask about their status. I'm sure they are not very busy right now and won't mind stopping whatever they are doing to answer everyone's individual questions. This way, you might delay the persons case they were working on from getting an invitiation and you can take their spot.
Is "Patience" mentioned in SPB Rule 172? If not, it should be.

What 20 years ago when you were hired, you weren't excited and impatient? Cut these guys some slack for crying out loud. Cadet Hiring's job is to answer the phones and help these guys out.

Of course I was excited but I was also patient and waited until I got the call. I know we now live in a time where we want everything right now. Perhaps that is part of what is wrong with todays "Me, me, me generation".
I disagree. Cadet Hiring Unit's job is to fill the classes. By the time CHU gets the completed case there isn't a whole lot they can do to help. Perhaps if you've been in limbo for an extended period of time they can check but I don't believe that is the case here. The point of contact should be the background investigator or recruiter. Making phone calls will not make anything move any faster. If you've ever visited them within 1 month of a class begining you would know that they are working their tails off to get the class filled and handle their regular every day business. How about cutting CHU some slack.

If you've ever had a conversation with the Sgt. of Cadet Hiring, he will tell you (as he did me when I was in the process) that if you have questions by all means contact Cadet Hiring. A BI or Recruiter cannot tell you if you have been cleared, only Cadet Hiring can. So why bog down a BI or Recruiter? The bottom line is we need people and if we are telling them they can't call for their status, they may get frustrated and go somewhere else.

I've had many conversations with him, both during work and after hours. He is a great guy and always puts on a happy face. That's just the kind of guy he is. He will tell you everything is alright when the sky is falling down.
But you are wrong about CHU being the only ones that know if an applicants has been cleared. Every Division has a number of recruiters or background investigators who have access to the database that tracks every applicant and their status. I'm not saying don't call, I'm saying call the person who will be less inconvenienced, has the ability to answer your question and probably has a personal interest in your case. That would most likely be your recruiter or background investigator. I don't know of a single recruiter or background investigator who wouldn't take the time to do some research on your behalf after they completed your case. Don't you know we get a free turkey for every applicant we get into the Academy?
If I could offer just a bit of insight to the end of the application process and why this is CHU's busiest time. Completed cases are constantly being received at CHU. They can process them only to a certain point until they get the OK to start sending out invitations. This normally happens about 6 weeks before the class begins. Once the OK is given they must insure all is in order for every case that will receive an invitation, make a very good educated guess of how many invitations need to be sent in order to fill the class with a specific number of cadets, prepare the invitations and send them out, track each of those invitations and their status, track those who accept the invitation, those who decline the invitation, those who waive, those who simply don't respond and those who might get a late invitation. Now if the class is not yet filled just several weeks before it begins they must keep in close touch with the medical and psych doctors to determine who might have a shot of receiving an invitation, try to figure out who will most likely accept a short notice invitation and who might not and a number of other factors. At this point invitations are being sent on a daily basis, some by over-nite courier in an effort to get a quick response.
During this time period CHU looks like a war room with different stacks of cases in the different stages spread out. It looks like pandemonium but is very organized.
As I said before, they do all of this while performing their daily duties including reviewing incoming reports and making certain all of the elements are included to justify the investigators recommendation, attending appeal hearings, writing and sending out letters of disqualification, keeping the 3rd floor updated on the status of the pending class, proctoring QAP training sessions for every Division, sometimes conducting CVSA's for Divisions that are lacking in examiners, writing research papers, reading research papers and exploring ways to improve our process and answering phone calls. CHU has a great group of folks who are dedicated to filling every class to the best of their abilities. Sometimes they fall short but never due to a lack of effort on their part. There are just some things that are beyond their control. They are personal friends of mine and I'm only trying to make things a bit easier for them during this time when they already have a full plate.
[quote=snowdog;31241At this point invitations are being sent on a daily basis, some by over-nite courier in an effort to get a quick response.[/quote]
This is what they did for me, but that was because for some reason I never did get the first packet they sent to me. Likely my mail carrier we seem to not get some mail from time to time that I am expecting..... And the CHU actually called me to inquire if I was still interested before sending out the paperwork overnight. So it seems to me they make every effort to attempt and make sure you get your packet and get it back to them.

A half dozen people to field calls from several hundred applicants??? Not going to work. I agree -- be patient. I remember being very excited and eager to know when I would start. I also remember waiting patiently like everyone else.

just some quick advice for your family orientation because we got short notice as my hubby's academy invite was 2 1/2 weeks before academy & the orientaion invite was 2 or 3 days before the event. if you have small children get some childcare that will also accept short notice. write down some of your questions on a notepad oh bring a notepad too:biggrin: as the officer will answer some of those questions so you can ck them off. listen well because there is no sugarcoating in what they say so you'll have plenty more as a couple/support group to discuss later. CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!! best wishes if you have spouses or significant others who would like to connect let them PM me i have connected w/ both classes wives & let me tell you no one else gets it like us.

Great advice Rayni. We always emphasize "please don't bring your small children who will either cry, talk, need to visit the bathroom or stare at the person behind them the whole time". Childcare might be tough but please don't penalize the others for your personal sake. If your spouse can't make it due to childcare, get their questions beforehand and make sure you come home with the answers.
You might want to have a couple of index cards with you and your cadets names, address and telephone number to share with anyone you connnect with on the night of the orientation. Considering you are attending the same orientation, odds are you live relatively close and your support system has just grown.

yes, I wish I had known/thought about the index cards beforehand! Rayni & I know we were at the same orientation, even took the tour together, but couldn't place each other until we met after our cadets started the academy.
Regarding the small children: if you bring your small child, you will most likely miss out on most of the orientation anyways since you will be attending to your kid. So definitely get a sitter, but if you can't I agree with Snowdog, stay home and send your questions with your cadet. If your child can't sit still and *quietly* entertain themselves for at least 1.5 hours straight, don't bring them to orientation. I was SO glad we left our (14-mo. old) baby at home, I would have been very frustrated having to be there and yet be missing out on the information (plus annoying everyone else with our disruptions!).

I have been accepted to the June 18th Academy. I am not ready to run 4 miles, only 2, but I doubt I'll ever be ready. This is all happening so fast for me. I haven't accepted the invitation yet because I wanted to ask family and they are telling me to go. ( I think they want me gone.)
I've been told the orientation is the 14th. 98% chance I am going.

If you wait until you think you are 100% physically ready, you'll never go. If you don't have any injuries or other reasons not to, don't pass it up. You sacrifice seniority with every class you waive (the longer you wait, the higher your ID number will be), and no matter WHAT you do physically before you go to the Academy, you're still going to get your butt kicked in PT. It will NEVER be easy.....ask anybody who's been through it.
I was 21 when I got the offer. I was scheduled for the class starting 13 weeks later, but the lady informed me that there were openings in the class which started the following Monday (7 days from then). I didn't ASK my family anything - I accepted the offer immediately and then TOLD them that I was going the following Monday.

AaeJae take this great opportunity and attend the academy. Everyone is going have some areas that they are going to need to improve on. I have been working on my pull-ups for months and I could only do one. This is where teamwork comes into play and everyone can help each other out whether you may perhaps assist someone else in shining their boots while others assist you in areas you need help. But you get the idea. Most people will have some weak area but there is always going to be room for imrpvement.

I would take the offer, they dont start you off running 4 miles from the get go, they build you up to that amount. Alot of PT is mental, as my good friend Leonides once said... "there is no retreat no surrender". Go by that motto and you will be up to 4 miles in no time

I don't know how you're working out now, but try to find someone to run with. When I started running with my friend I ran nearly twice as far as I normally did when I ran alone- the first time out!
Its probably better to run with someone who can kick your butt at running, not someone slower than you (for obvious reasons). The guy I run with runs marathons, so trying to keep up with him took my mind off of being tired.

yes that is the only difference. remember what snowdog said valley division applicants were the ones who had orientation at the academy. west sac is where the academy is so for those who tested etc in the area make sense to hold their orientation there. i wouldn't ponder too much on where your orientation is held just go to it w/ your support system minus kids of course. nothing against kids i have them but when we went we had a little screamin demon behind us   we were glad we left ours at home. oh & on first day at the academy it won't matter who's seen the academy grounds before because the staff will welcome you all as if it was your first visit:lol:
That makes me smile. Being from the Sacramento area our Physical Abilities test was at the academy. We already met the academy staff! It looked just like the video academy blues. Honestly one of the things I am most worried about is not cracking a smile when they are yelling at someone. Some of the stuff they come up with to say really is very funny.
But the orientation had a lot of useful information. They had 4 Senior cadets come in and talk to us. 2 of them were company commanders, one was the youngest cadet in their class, and the other sounded as though he had the most trouble out of any body in the class. He was 300lbs when he went in, lost 70 lbs since he has been in the academy, lost i think 17 Wednesday liberty's, with a few weekends in between and had to double floor exercises for a large part of his stay at the academy! I was very impressed with him that he was to be graduating. He said they are paying me to do this, so I just look at PT as OT!

i was also invited to attend a orientation at the academy june 17th, see ya guys the 18th
I just learned yesterday that an orientation is scheduled for the entire class and family members on the 17th. I don't know specific times. This is brand new and an attempt to familiarize cadets and family members before the start date. It's primary purpose is to allow family members a chance to get a visual idea of where their cadet is so when they call/write home they aren't so much in the dark. This is not mandatory but highly recommended. If you haven't received an invitation, contact your Division Recruiter, they are in charge of running it. Once again, please leave your young kids with a sitter for those few hours or allow your cadet to attend alone. If you were there last night you know how one young enegetic (talks back to his parents) kid can disrupt everything. And, even the older well behaved kids get antsy after a couple of hours.
For those at the orientation last night at the Academy, this is the first time the staff office came in and spoke directly to family members only. I thought it was very effective, especially his advice of "don't let your cadet quit".
The senior class is only 8 days away from graduation but still lost two classmates this week to an exam. That sucks to get that far then fail. The point is, don't become complacent thinking "it's all down hill from here on in" until you have that badge on your chest. And even then, remember break-in is just as tough and you can still lose it all. Good Luck to you all.

i've been hearing and reading about different amounts of money we are supposed to have in our checking accounts to write those checks on the first day. Does anyone know what the approximate dollar amount is?

I agree with Rayni, if you only have exactly $275 in your bank account, you'll be feeling the squeeze. The exact $ amount we paid was $278, but that was only the tip of the iceberg. However, that's the only thing we had to have specific cash in our checking for; everything else you have the option of paying for with credit card. Don't forget to keep all those receipts if you itemize on your taxes. The bottom line is what Rayni has been saying all along: you will probably spend very close to $1000 in the first month or so (casting an eye on my checkbook, I estimate we paid $900 in the 1st month). And then when you're done with that first bit, you will find you're constantly paying for one thing or another; after talking to wives of the soon-to-be graduates, this is a trend that just doesn't stop. So just be aware of this, and let whoever else you share your finances with know this. Obviously many cadets & their families have been able to swing it before us, and we'll/you'll all be fine.

Wow, that much on what?
*not looking for you to disgorge your spending, just a basic overview of what we will be expected to provide oueselves with.*
The $275 is what the packet suggest you have to cover the checks you will need to write. Are you telling me that you spent $1000.00 in the first month after going to the academy? If so what was the money spent on?
I know I will be spending close to $1000.00 total between buying my boots, misc stuff care goodies, towels, socks, court shoes, running shoes, etc etc. and the $275ish dollars I am expecting to fork out for the uniform rental (the 2 checks we are told to bring with us).

:) You are just scaring me when you say you spent $1000 bucks the first month! Just want to make sure there is enough funds for what I will need and what my family needs at home till we get paid! So basically it sounds like what was spent was around 275-350 at the academy in the first month? But around $1000.00 was spent overall between what was spent at the academy and before you ever showed up?

Best wishes to the next class of cadets Ctc 2-07

ok, just for you, RA, I tallied up the checkbook. It actually was $720 for the 1st month. The first time I added it up, I included a purchase from month 2 (whoops). That $720 includes the $278, and does *not* include boots, running shoes, or any of the other stuff we bought in preparation for the academy. There has been at least 1-2 purchases per month I'd say, so if you have a significant other, let them know that there will be more stuff you have to purchase as you go, but I believe the lion's share is in the first month. And we tend to not be caviar purchasers, Rayni  We shop at fine establishments such as Walmart, etc.
Now, you CTC-II-07'ers have an advantage because you're starting in the middle of the month. We had to go 1 whole month without pay, since CTC-I-07 started on April 2nd.
Thank you and Ouch! But good 2 know, if dont mind me asking what were some of the "extras" that you had buy that first month, just so I have an idea if its stuff I may already have or not. And yes getting a partial pay check only 2 weeks in is going to help me out tons with my exspenses.

I'm not sure of all the stuff, a lot of the receipts I get just say "CHP recreational fund" whatever that means! What, are they just doing recreational activities out at Camp Snoopy? All I remember is there was a list my cadet came home with on the first weekend, and we ran around town and bought various supplies that have to do with school. Rayni, do you remember what some of the stuff was? That's not much help, but let your family know that the first weekend back home will probably be a pretty busy one for you, so don't plan on doing much.

Rayni, you crack me up! Love the devil horns and the warning. And she's not kidding either, guys.
I pulled it back, but I didn't include expenses that led up to the academy, and I believe that you specified that you included pre-academy expenses when you mentioned the $1000. So if I add in the boots and running shoes, white towels, undershirts, socks, etc., it's WELL in excess of $1000.

I see that CTC-I-07 started with 191 and CTC-II-07 will start with basically the same amount of cadets at 190.
An observation:
If CTC-I is roughly half-way through their academy and has lost 30 or so; CTC-II may have about the same number of drop-outs by their half way point, too.
It seems like those who participate in this forum would have an advantage over the other cadets who are not a part of it and the drop out rate would be less?:noidea:

Statistics, statistics, statistics. I never believed in them until I personally observed CHU estimate how many applications were needed to get a certain number of applicants just to appear for the written test, how many would fail the written test, how many would appear and fail the PAT, how many would get DQ'd at QAP's, how many would pass or fail backgrounds and how many would pass/fail psych. They do this consistently year after year and come extremely close every time. The Department already has a very good idea of how many will graduate from each class and odds are the trend will continue. In fact, i think the percentage of resignations/terminations from CTC I-07 will be higher than CTC IV-06.
It would also seem that those who participate here would have an advantage in the entire testing process but there are many posters who get disqualified. We know because odds are that we already know who you are before we even meet you. Of course we would never post "Applicant XXXX got DQ'd today". Go back 6 months on some threads, see who is posting alot on a subject, especially when they discuss how excited they are about upcoming interviews, then you'll notice they suddenly disappear. Also keep in mind that many lurk here without ever posting a word (I like to refer to them as the smart ones) so I don't think we will never know if they had an advantage.
99% of all statistics are meaningless.
85% of all statistics are made up on the spot.
70% percent of the time, it works everytime! LOL
You got a 50-50 chance of getting it right and 100% of the time you get it wrong.

Good one! I've got 17 years down on that one!
Great advice Rayni. We always emphasize "please don't bring your small children who will either cry, talk, need to visit the bathroom or stare at the person behind them the whole time". Childcare might be tough but please don't penalize the others for your personal sake. If your spouse can't make it due to childcare, get their questions beforehand and make sure you come home with the answers.I wish someone had told this to everyone that came to the Sunday orientation. The baby crying thru the second half of the orientation/tour, coupled with the kids running in the back and the child yelling, made the orientation difficult to hear at times. I will also say there were 2 young ladies in the front row (ages between 4-6 it looked like) that were ANGELS, not a word and kept up on the walk around. Then there were the 3 boys (ages 1-5) who were climbing on everything in the rooms/classrooms etc....

5 quit or failed Out? At this 1/2 way mark aren't they all pretty much fail outs then resignations? At this point this was the hardest for the cadets to lose cadets to fail outs. Good luck to those that get a chance to retread.

To clarify the change in class size before more rumors start, we lost another 2 cadets to lagging injuries this week. EVOC has been a hungry monster the last few weeks, however. It is really hard losing classmates at this point in the academy, because you establish such close relationships with them. The worst part about seeing cadets packing their stuff up is the mental games that begin in your own head. You start wondering how tough EVOC really is and when doubt creeps in, you start losing some of the confidence you have in your own driving abilities.
15 weeks down, 12 weeks to go...Congrats to our seniors on their upcoming graduation and good luck to you as you hit the road.

Ahhhh...I love reading the Dream Sheet. There are some GREAT choices on that list...particularly within Southern Division.
Incidently mom, Blythe is Border Div, not Inland, just FYI....Ya know, I knew that! But I was so tired when I was trying to do this. There are a couple other errors, but I'll keep those to myself....

Rather than the confusing 'Division' method of dividing the state, I still think it would make more sense to divide the State the same way Disneyland does at the park. Fantasyland...Tomorrowland...Adventureland...Front ierland...Country Bear Jamboree...etc...
I'll sit back now and let everybody assign the offices to the 'Land' that fits...Don't be shy...

Nice to see those numbers, especially 11 to SoLA. Good luck cadets, keep it locked up for a few more weeks.

How about Tomorrowland for So. Division, because that is where the majority of the new officers are gonna be in the near future?
Could we take Central Division, and rename it Fantasyland? It's only a Fantasy you might see it on the Dream Sheet. (Yes, Los Banos was on the last Dream Sheet, but its a rarity...)

I doubt anyone really cares but "Moorepark" (Moorpark) is in Coastal Division. It is a branch off of the Ventura office in Ventura County. It is NOT one of those L.A. "no force blood draw" offices.
....ooopps - - looks like G-Man beat me to this informative correction...

(OK, vacation time) and just too much to do to be able to go. But his GF went and hung out (ie went shopping) until the graduation party last night. They both really enjoyed the party. I can't wait to see him tomorrow. We are heading up early. He gave us all these directions on where to be when. I seriously hope this isn't as hard as his directions make it sound!!!!

for all those who graduated, congrats, now is the next big step. Listen and remember.
Today's graduation was fantastic. Watching my son's grandfather pin him almost 50 years exactly from when the grandfather was at the academy was unbelieveable. My son's grandfather's badge was in the 2500 range, while my son is in the 18000 range!! We have pics of them both holding their badges. Besides that highlight, I think the other great highlight was when one officer was receiving his badge and cert, and his young son yelled "Good job daddy!!"

HotPursuit checkin' in! What a ride!!!
I will definitely take that advice Officer Grady.
It has been a very challenging 27 weeks and as much as I enjoyed the camaraderie, I am ready to put into practice what I have learned at the Academy. Pretty soon, it will be time to start break-in.
For those future cadets, take it seriously and don't give up! There are times to have fun, but remember to take serious those things that you will have to learn as they may very well save your hide.
The fun has only just begun...
Congratulations to our new officers!
Now the rubber meets the road - time to put everything you've learned to work in the field. Be safe, be smart and enjoy your career - you're in for a great ride. Always remember - "Do the right thing for the right reason." If you heed that one simple piece of advice you will avoid a lot of pitfalls.

Anyone care to take bets on when we pop ID #20000?
My prediction, based on current rate of consumption: either IV-09, or II-10, depending on if there's 4 classes per year, or 3, respectively.
I never in my wildest dreams thought I'd see officer ID's up to 20000 back in 89 when I started.......then again, I never thought non-sworn would get up to 15000's and if we aren't there now, we are close.
