Got this e mail today from a co worker

THINK SAFETY

To everyone operating a motor vehicle,

I am sure that a lot of you already know this, but for those who don't.......Effective July 1, 2005 a new law has come into effect. This law states that anyone operating a motor vehicle with their windshield wipers on must also have their headlights on. I have heard that warnings will be issued for a couple of weeks (depending on what area you're in) and after that it will be a $100.00 fine.

So everyone be safe and use your headlights with your windshield wipers when it's raining.

I'm not being a nit-picker but unless your daytime running lights are your headlamps they would not qualify. I'm specifically thinking of GM vehicles and some Saturns that have seperate lights. I don't believe that they qualify according to the new section.

My wife's Toyota Highlander has the DRL's and they really are not very bright. She's always thinking safety when we drive (locks all the doors etc..) If anyone get's popped for this in our family It's going to be yours truly.

Remember one key thing about DRL's, they only work for cars in front of you. This law is about being seen from the back as well, and DRL's do not turn on your taillamps.

The law only says if the wipers are on continuously that the headlights must be on. There is a loop hole that makes it not applicable if your wipers are on intermittently. Go figure.

Don't you guys have enough to do on rainy days already?

MY JEEP ACTUALLY HAS A SETTING THAT TURNS THE HEADLIGHTS ON WHENEVER THE WIPERS ARE ON. THEY DO HAVE TO BE ON THE FASTEST INTERMITTENT SETTING OR FASTER TO TURN ON THE HEADLIGHTS. THERE IS A SLIGHT DELAY BEFORE THEY GO ON WITH THE INTERMITTENT SETTING.

Not all of us have fancy new Jeeps. Nice picture by the way, can't imagine where you got it.

I have been dealing with rain and snow for the last month. Only a few folks, very few, actually have their headlights on when windshield wipers are on. I know about the new law but it wasn't advertised at all which puts the public at a disadvantage. I haven't stopped anyone for the violation yet and probably won't unless there is a media campaign to fortify my efforts. I also live too close to the border and many violators are from Oregon where no such law exists. I'm sorry but a verbal is all I can muster until the word gets out.

I personally can't get real excited about it either. If it's raining hard enough for wipers to be on continuously, I'm not getting out of the car to write a ticket unless it's a righteous/hazardous violation!

Can't tell you how many times I'm sitting in my office at work (off ramp not 30 yards away) and I'll hear "when you get to the bottom of the ramp turn into the hotel parking lot" as soon as most people hear the Officers voice they freak out and stop right in the middle of the ramp. Then I hear...(in a little more harsh voice)..."don't stop here, I said go to the bottom of the ramp and turn into the parking lot"...and me having a good chuckle from my window....guess I'm saying I see your point dw. Oh yeah BTW not once have I seen a warning, always a cite and sometimes even a tow.
