CHP officer injured in crash

A California Highway Patrol officer was injured in one of two crashes this morning in San Diego County involving CHP cars, authorities said.

The officer was hurt in a collision involving a wrong-way driver on southbound Interstate 5 at Dairy Mart Road in National City -- reported about 11:30 a.m., according to the CHP. The alleged wrong-way driver also was hurt.

One victim was taken to Paradise Valley Hospital and the other to UCSD Medical Center, a Heartland fire dispatcher said. Condition reports were not immediately available.

In Escondido, a Jeep Cherokee plowed into a CHP cruiser parked on northbound Interstate 15 -- south of State Route 78 -- to divert traffic at the scene of previous crash, which occurred about 9:30 a.m., Escondido fire Capt. Peter Montgomery said.

As emergency crews examined a woman hurt in the first crash, a Jeep approached, Montgomery said. The Jeep driver slammed on the brakes but they locked and the SUV hit the patrol car, he said.

No one was in the CHP car at the time, Montgomery said, and the Jeep driver was not injured, Montgomery said.

The woman was taken to Palomar Medical Center.
