A member of the California Highway Patrol and another driver were seriously injured Thursday when a police cruiser and a van were involved in a head-on crash on Highway 121 In Sonoma County, according to NBC11. The accident happened around 8:55 a.m. on state Highway 121 between state Highway 12 and Eighth Street in downtown Schellville.
Chopper11 flew over the scene and showed the cruiser suffered major damage.
It appears the top of the cruiser had to be cut off in order to get the officer out.
A white van also suffered major front-end damage, according to NBC11.
The crash happened within a few feet of the Schellville Fire Station. It is directly behind the station.
Assistant Fire Chief Ray Mulas said the male CHP officer was taken by REACH helicopter to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital. The female driver was flown by the Sonoma County Sheriff's Department's helicopter Henry-1 to Memorial Hospital.
Memorial Hospital spokesman Kevin Andrus said the CHP officer suffered a laceration on his arm and the woman suffered a leg fracture. Both are in stable but guarded condition in the trauma unit, Andrus said. Their injuries are not life-threatening, Andrus said.
Mulas said the woman had to be extricated from her vehicle because a post inside her vehicle severely cut into her leg. Both drivers were in and out of consciousness, Mulas said.
Highway 121 is closed between Highway 116 and 8th Street.
The highway patrol told NBC11 it does not expect the road to reopen until 2 p.m.
NBC11's Mike Inouye said drivers should consider Napa Road as alternate route.
