I'm looking for some type of cheap transportation to and from the academy. I start in April and I need something that is good on gas mileage. I don't plan on commuting home on weekends much but I still need something. I need cheap, gas saver, and dependable. PM me please.

You are asking for a lot there,
The west coast is awash in used cars, but finding all three of your requirements at once puts you in competition with teenagers sprouting thier wings, thousand of working class stiffs, and a few million illegal aliens.
Dare I suggest reading the obituaries for older victims and then attending the wakes to see if any for sale signs are in the vicinity. Old folks don't necessarily maintain their vehicles better, but they do usually drive them less. My kid just recently bought and partially restored an old VW Bug. Get's about 40 or more MPG and seems to run all the time after the little motor was rewound..er rebuilt. I think he has around 5K invested in it now, but that includes such teen necessities as shiny rims, smooth paint, and big speakers. You can get by on less, right?

Hence my long search...

That's a good one Aya! Never heard of poaching wakes for cars LOL! I I agree if you can get Granny's rarely driven, smells like an old fart, car then your golden. Just buy a little vanilla tree to hang from the dash. Those are few and far between though.

Good for him. I think one of the best ways to learn responsibility is for a kid to buy his own car and take care of it.
So now I need all the old farts here to sell me there car! (just kidding) But I am still looking...

I'm sure there is something closer to you....but if you are able to come over to the valley, try the auto auctions in Salida (near Modesto). I know several people who have gotten hellacious deals there.......... 1st and 3rd Saturdays of a month, http://www.rogerernst.com/
Or Alameda Auto Auction - 1st Saturday of the month, http://www.acauction.com/

Saw that somewhere else and just had to share. (read the whole thing, its worth the chuckle)
But seriously, CL is a great place to search. I put my Audi up there last Saturday night and the soon to be new owner emailed me 20 minutes later and he and I are meeting this weekend in Vacaville to do the deal.
good luck in your search.

That was hilarious, I like the idea of it shaking so bad when it idols that you get a back massage! I am using craigslist, cars.com, and trade express. I've found a few good deals only to have them swept up before I could get them. I like the idea of the auto auction, but its a bit of a drive for someone without a car. I've still got a month till the academy...

Dude, that is the most depressing outlook on buying a car I have ever heard!

You could add a quart of Roundup to the oil and drive around the neighborhood killing all the joggers and crabgrass
Seriously, I'm in tears here. Thanks for the laugh.

Sent you a PM. This is exactly what I was hoping for, and I do travel to the OC for work and personal quite often. That is until April 2. I'm very thankful for the infomation and awesome leads this forum has provided for me.

I found and bought a 1997 Toyota Corolla today. It had 85,000 miles and I got it for $1,900! My wife talked him down from $2,500 (she sells cars for a living). Anyways, its a great little dependable, gas saver. Now I know how I'll make it to Sacramento in two weeks! See you all there!

that's a pretty good buy, just make sure you change the oil and timing belt on that thing. You probably won't need the timing belt done till you graduate from the academy. By that time, you'll want a new car. Did you say you wanted $1000 for that Corolla?

I think timing belts are supposed to be changed around the 60,000 mile mark. And if that thing ever breaks where you are,is where you stay.

That's why I'm going to get it replaced before 4/2. I had a dealership do an inspection and they recommended replacing it so its a no-brainer, now to find a place that will do for less than an arm and a leg!
