Is it a good idea to become EMT certified prior to becoming an officer, or is it something not to worry about because the academy will teach you what you need to know? Thanks in advance.

No, no need to become an EMT prior to the Academy. The cadets learn to be first responders at the academy. If you want to be an EMT you can be. Not sure if the Dept. pays for that or not. If you are already an EMT the Dept. has refreshers available to keep up on your certs. and training.

Cadets are only trained to the EMR level at the Academy. Recently, the Department has offered limited EMT courses for those interested. In the past, the Academy trained Cadets as EMTs, as such, we do offer all required training to maintain your certification.
