News doing a story now on TV about a CHP Officer being shot tonight here in So. Cal on the I-15 frwy in the Ontario area. Seems this was another routine stop when the Officer was wounded. He was shot in the leg and is expected to recover.

The computer at work said the officer was going to impound the car when it went down. Sounds like they have all the info on the guy.

If there is one thing I've learned about police work, when someone shoots a cop everyone goes into the "get um" mode. This dude better hope God turns him into a tree or something real fast.

I was on a ride along with Rancho Cucamonga when the 11-99 call went out for this officer. We actually drove by him a few minutes earlier when the traffic stop first occured while en route to our beat . We responded to the call from Chino Hills. While driving to the scene, we were in & out of Code 3. Being in that situation, I can tell you (for those who have never been in that type of situation), it was nothing like what Hollywood makes it look like.

The officer had already been taken to the hospital. While en route to the scene the officer I was with asked me if I was ok. Knowing how many things were going through his mind, I thought that was awesome that he was concerned about me. He kept his cool and was a testimony to the Department.

Sergeants got on the radio and ordered freeway closures. Allied agencies came in to help with the closures, crime scene investigation and the search for the suspect. ABPs went out to SDSO, SDPD, Border Division, Border Patrol and US Customs incase the suspect made a break for the border. If was quite remarkable seeing that all come together without a hitch.

Hearing the 11-99 call over the radio and then seeing the crime scene was a very sobering experience. As a candidate, I have always known this to be a dangerous job but that incident really brought that point home. It has also strengthened my resolve to be an officer.

After things had calmed down and the word came through that the injured officer was ok, the officer I was with told me that I would definitely have a lot to talk about at my QAP. Another officer told me that I experienced something few RAs ever experience. While it was certainly an experience I will never forget, I would trade it in a heartbeat to have the officer back on patrol. I am glad that he is recovering and that the suspects are in custody.

I assume that the suspect will be charged with attempted murder. Does the fact that it was a crime against an officer carry any additional charges or is it just treated like any other attempted murder case?

Stay safe!!

PS: I know that what happens during RAs is to stay on the road so I kept some of what happened off of here. If any officers think I posted anything that I shouldn't have please let me know so I can pull it.

K-Lo,

Wow what an experience for you to go through on a ride along. It is quite a sobering experience for one to go through. Glad that you shared it with us. Sometimes we take it for granted and this certainly brings our mortality to the fore front of our minds. It also makes us more aware of our officer saftey and not become complaicent. Although some things cannot be avoided I'm glad that this situation turned out for the good. After last week, and attending Officer Stevens funeral, I know that I am so much more aware of my surroundings. Congrats with your choice to go for the Blue and Gold. You have a great career ahead of you.
