That's great
I understand where you guys are coming from and I know you mean no offense. The officer leaving the incident unscathed is absolutely a positive outcome, but it is important to remember that a combat shooting is a worst-cast scenario. No one wants to find themselves in a situation where they have to take someones life. A combat shooting is a traumatic event, not to mention one in which the suspect is killed. This is not television or the movies -- the officer doesn't go home and "suck it up." An officer involved in such an incident is a victim and needs to be treated as such. His/her life was threatened and he/she defended themself.
As if the stress of shooting at and/or killing someone is not enough, it's only the beginning. There will be criminal, civil, and internal investigations during which the officer is questioned regarding a homicide. The process is difficult, stressful, and will last for years. An officer could easily be testifying years later in a civil trial, the whole time wondering if he'll loose his home. Knowing you did the right thing is of little reassurance in our litigious society where settling is often more feasible than proving your innocence -- or taking the risk of a juror who believes the assailant should get five-hundred large because you didn't shoot him in the leg (like they see on television).
Again, I'm thrilled to hear our officer is alive, but this is nothing worth celebrating.
The news story you linked to shows a date of January 23, 2004, and was in El Cajon Area.....that's not the same incident as Friday's shooting, which was in Ontario/Rancho Cucamonga. I don't have all the details yet as I'm on days off, but it was the result of a traffic stop and the Officer was hit, but survived....that's about all I know.

I agree with your comments and meant no offense. I still believe that it is something to be happy about, that is, the Officer gets to go home to his family, and the guy who tried to take him away from his family lost the battle. I truly understand the society we live in, and how people believe that if they saw it on TV, it must be true. But...the Officer is alive and the bad guy is dead. That is how it should always be!!! The family of the bad guy will sue, and will use the defense, "The Officer didn't have to KILL him", but the truth will prevail, and hopefully the Officer's attorney will do his or her job, and the jury will understand. It is really sad that our society has gotten to a point where a criminal can sue an Officer for doing his or her job, protecting us, and he or she has to actually worry about a jury finding in favor of the crook.
The Officer is alive...The bad guy is dead...

These were two seperate incidents. One was a prusuit that ended in a combat shooting and the Officer shot and killed the suspect. Another was an officer on a traffic stop in Ontario and was shot twice. Once in the knee and once in stomach or buttox (conflicting news reports there). The Officer that was shot was supposed to be going home today to recover at home and from what I hear he is doing well.

DW,
Excellent comments. A shooting, even when the officer comes out on top, is just not a positive thing for the officer, his family, and the department.

KCAL Channel 9 News in Los Angeles (9:00 PM, Sunday) reported that one of the shooters (I guess from the news report there were two brothers involved) was in custody in Liberal, Kansas.

That is exactly what I mean, I prefer a cop alive and a killer dead.
