My husband is hoping to join the CHP after he gets out of the Air Force this December. Does anyone know how long the wait might be for him to get into the academy? We need to figure out housing, (right now he's stationed at Nellis AFB in Las Vegas, NV) where he might work if he doesn't go into the academy right away and many other smaller details. Any information that you could give me would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!!!!

Currently the testing process can range from 6 months to 2 years depending on the extent of the applicants past. I would recommend he begin testing immediatelly and if things move along smoothly he could be ready to transition into the first Academy class after he discharges. Good luck and thanks to both of you for his service and your support.

I started the testing process July 2006 and took the final test November 2006. I was just notified in January 2007 that I am heading to the April 2nd Academy. The Academy is a live-in academy for the Cadet only (no-spouse) and it lasts 27 weeks. Hope that helps

I took my first test October 05 and, after a long process including a psych decision appeal, was told by my BI that I'll be receiving a packet for April's academy...
Hang in there, everyone! If it's meant to be, it will happen...
bluestars :
My husband is in the Marine Corps and in the process of joining the C.H.P. It is a pretty long process only because we had to wait untill he got closer to his E.A.S before they would do the background investigation because they dont want to give him a date and send him while he is on terminal leave just to have him get called back to active duty.
Starting now wont hurt him. Just know that there might be times you have to wait longer than you want to find out what is going on. We were hopeing that we would have had the date for my husband by now but I understand why they wanted to wait.
He will hopefully be gettint accepted for the April date.
GOOD LUCK!

I found out over the phone. She said the packets will go out soon, as in the next few weeks. Look forward to meeting some of you at the academy!

I spoke with a lady from Sacramento who was able to confirm my psych results. I don't remember her name.

It took me a little over a year to get my letter. I had a hold-up on my medical due to some VA issues. By the time they cleared me, after about two and a half months, I only had three week until the December academy.
I had my Psych oral 31 JAN 07 and got the invitation 16 FEB 07!

I'm looking into becoming an officer. How would me being an officer affect my family, as far as holidays and days off? Have the officers here had good experiences with their families adapting?

CHP is 24/7 365. You may work holidays you may not, it just depends on were your days off fall. CHP is not a M-F, 9-5 job. Im sure your family would support you. From what I read on this site from CHP spouses, they worry at first but then they understand.

If your family is understanding about the requirements of the CHP (which they should be before you enter the academy) than they should understand that some of the "normal" things will have to change. You will learn to have holidays with extended family either earlier or later than normal in order for your spouse/significant other to be involved. If your spouse/significant other is truly supportive than they will work with the schedule you are giving and not be inconvenienced by the fact that the career path you have chosen is not like everyone else and changes will have to be made. If you have inlaws and can spend holidays with them when your spouse/significant other is off and than spend time with your family when he works it may work out for everyone. You will also learn to make new traditions and adapt to a new way of doing things. Remember that you will have to make changes as well as your family in order to have the least amount of disruption possible. This is a career that will be life changing but well worth it in the end. Good Luck!

it looks like all the worries are from guys/gals allready married.
The best way to get in is to be SINGLE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Its easier that way.
Wait maybe 5 years, sign the pre-nuptial agreement and then buy property under someone else name. lol (besides your home).
That way if your ex touches your retirement savings, you will have a nice cushion stashed somewhere.
