Just starting this for those that took the test in Sacramento on 01-20-07. I know it was only a few days ago so it should take some time.

Not bad. Sitting there through those forms was a pain but that comes with it.

The test was nothing I did not expect. I may have it easy compared to some though; I spent 5 years in college, highest honors all that jazz...and I'm a good test taker.

Overall, if I missed more than 6 or 7 I would be shocked. This part of the process is the easiest for me....I'm more concerned with the Psych and QAP.

Kudos to all who braved the cold though and good luck!

It doesnt matter how many you miss, nor will you find out how many you did, all that counts is a passing score.

Sorry, I guess I could have tried to answer that. If history repeates itself, results start being received about 10 days before the PAT. So, hopefully you might receive them by this Friday or at least by the following Monday or Ttuesday. If you don't get anything by the 8th, it's definitely time to make a call. Good Luck, hope to see a whole bunch of you there.

CHP envelope in the mail today.....passing with 65.7. One note to all....if you are applying to other agencies, the CHP T-Score is a POST score and most will waive their POST written battery if you submit the CHP T-Score. In that sense the score does matter because every agency has a different cut off so the higher you score the more likely your chances of getting waived and not having to take the silly thing again.

Out all last night with a local PD on my first ride along....great officer, great agency and two Code-3 calls. What a time....I want to do this more now than ever before. Have my CHP ride along next week...cannot wait.

Best of luck to all!!!

The reference below is directly from the POST website. Remember that T-Scores are NOT percentages. The whole purpose of T-scores is to provide a better measurement of each candidates abilites and how they work is pretty complex. BUT, what is known is that there is a direct correlation between test scores and academy grades and graduation. A full run down of T-scores is available at:

http://www.post.ca.gov/faqs/entrylevel_testscor.asp

Regardless, the higher the score the better you did and if you are looking for some sign of what a good score is, the highest T-score on a POST exam I have ever heard of is the very low 70 range.

1. What sort of test results will I receive?
Users of the test battery receive a computer printout which lists, for each applicant, total score on the writing tests, total score on the reading tests, and total score on the entire test battery. Total score on the writing tests and total score on the reading tests are expressed both as percents and as "t" scores. Total score on the entire battery is expressed as a "t" score only. Users also receive summary information regarding total sample, sample by gender, sample by ethnicity, and a table which assists in identifying relative ethnic and gender performance. Three versions of the printout are generated. On one, information is presented in score order based on the total T score. In another, information is presented in alpha order based on candidate last name. And, on the third, information is ordered according to candidate social security number. Typically, the user agency receives the score and alpha listings, and POST retains the social security number listing. When specifically requested, POST will provide the results on a computer diskette with the data in ASCII format. It is important to note that the POST Test Battery scores are expressed as T scores and not the more familiar percent correct scores. Even though commonly used, percentages have severe limitations as measures of test performance. While it is possible to re-scale T scores into a 70-100 range, this is strongly not recommended as the scores lose their meaning (the user can no longer calculate percentile equivalents to the "t" scores) and any combining of the recalibrated scores with other scores will result in erroneous list orders.

Congrats to those that passed the written. I am currently waiting for my oral psych and let me tell you...the hardest part of this hiring process has been waiting and wondering "Did I pass?" (for me at least). You'll be asking yourself that a lot, but to have made it this far is exciting. The good thing is, this hiring cycle is so fast and streamlined, you'll be in backgrounds in no time..well that is if you impress the QAP  I'm shooting for the April 2nd start date up in Sac..oh how I wish I could fast forward time

We could talk about standard deviations from the mean, or what a z score is, yet, that still would not help most of us understand what they are and what they are for. Let me chime in on the ?T? scores. These are scores to show your position/ability on the test not your achievement. Most of them are used to rank test takers among one another. Essentially, a test that is ?T? scored has each question weighted on a different scale. Take for instance the ?fill in the blank? section, this section may be worth a quarter of a point ( I have no idea how many points any of the questions are worth, just a guess here), while the essay question may be worth four points. To say one got an 80 percent would not reflect that they mastered the testing criteria. All it would point out is the individual tested well on the essay portion of the test and missed all fill in the blanks and spelling. Plus, from what I understand of a true ?T? score, is that it ranks the test takers in order? So each test has a different cut off score or amount of individuals that pass or fail. Does this make any sense? I am writing this early in the am and still have not had my Monster drink yet.

As far as study aids are concerned?go to the library and or a local book retailer, look up any test-taking book, and look through their paragraph comprehension sections. Those sections are great because you can read them and make your best guess at the right answer and then it will give you the correct answer. Some of the books you can look though are: the ASVAB, or SAT, or ACT, or many of the Police Officer exams. On the other hand, take the ASVAB test a few times with your local recruiter. But, do not let them enlist you as they did me?hehehehe Just a couple of ideas.

In addition, I teach my students to look through the entire test first. Use the test to answer your questions. Teachers and test makers are a funny bunch. They tend to leave clues all throughout the book or test. For example, I would take a state mandated test for math? and I would be stumped on a question concerning Pythagoreans theorem?guess what? Pythagoreans theorem would be just a few questions later. Thus, looking and finding the clue helped me to answer the question from a few choices ago. Plus, if you don?t know it, GUESS. Just some quick hitter strategies for taking tests. The information on the spelling, grammatical, comprehension and fill in the blanks are located in the applicant study guide located in the library links on this site.

I hope what I am about to share is taken in the right light; I busted my butt to study for this exam and used every possible means available. I am not the smartest cat on the block, but where I lack, I make up in work ethic. I make time to look through books and study while I run on the treadmill. I believe if a person wants it bad enough they will make every effort to accomplish the mission at hand. Personally, I have one shot to get through all of this and cannot afford a hiccup anywhere along the way. This site is awesome because so many people are willing to help, and provide advice. Much like the academy will be. Here is my attempt to help. Best of luck, nah not luck, Best of sweat, make it count now!

I would be surprised if its that low. Most municipal departments set the cut off at 42, 44, 46 (or somewhere around there) and my experience suggests the CHP is still the most difficult throughout the hiring process. But CHP is eager for recruits so who knows. I would say you need to assume the cut off is mid 40's.

That being said....if you get into the academy and your score was in the 40's life will likely be very hard. Police work of any kind is reports, reports, reports. Probably more so in CHP with all the accidents. You need to be confident in your spelling, writing, grammer, etc. before you go in or you may not make it through.

Best advice from me: Read. Read. Then read more. Take college courses. Forget the CHP testing thing for a year or two. Take English Comp 1 and 2 at a community college, maybe even a literature class that forces you to read and comprehend what is on every page.

DITTO KingTriton on everything T-Scores and Study stuff. Read my mind man!!! It's not luck, its all effort and drive.

aggienut,

Where do you get this info!! Have you attended the academy yet? T-score will not dictate how well someone will do in the academy...Its a score, who cares what you get as long as you pass. You know how many time I was asked what my t-score was during backgrounds...? zero times. To come on here and start down grading someone's score and telling them that life in the academy will be very hard for them if they received a score in the 40's in an insult...Everyone has strengths and weaknesses that will allow them to succeed in the academy. There will be tools and assistance for those who need the help. There is no way this written test dictates their success in academy!
For those who didn't pass, dont give up or be discouraged. Just take it again and pass. I know an officer who took it three times, and hes a very successful officer who didn't have trouble in the academy. Dont worry about your score because it will never be asked.

Whoa.... I am NOT trying to put anyone down. If anyone takes my comments that way, I apologize, they are not intended that way. The whole purpose of the process is to get a well-rounded individual and there IS more to life than your score on a test (believe me, I know).

You make good point about T-Scores and yes, everyone has weaknesses and that is NOT always a predictor of success (trust me I know, I thought I would fail in college and I excelled beyond my wildest dreams).

BUT go to the POST website. They have a graph that show there is a DIRECT, statistical correlation between the POST test score and academy/job performance. That is not an opinion....its a fact and all the research with regards to T-Scores over the years supports it. Can you buck the trend...of course, I am just making a point as to what the data shows us.

I wish all applicants the best in their process as I would hope they would wish me the same. This site IS for support and advice, not to drag anyone down and I hope I have not done that in this case.

Very well put goldendog. I have tested 3 times with the CHP. One time with a major sheriffs department in my area.....and Passed with a t-score of 48.9 that was back in October. Same test same questions. For those who are taking the test over and over until you pass... More power to you. That just shows you want it that much more. Wussy's will NEVER be Hero?s !! What is so confusing? Either you passed or failed. Nothing else matters. There are far too may people worrying about their score.

02-02-2007, 10:26 AM
^^^You're right, and I understand that. Pass or fail, nothing else matters. But I still feel that knowing the actual passing score will help me and others pass the test. Inside the "State Police Exam" book, which alot recommend, there is a section called the secrets of test success and it has questions to ask ourselves. How many questions does each section have? What is the passing score? How many questions do I have to get right to get that score? I just think that it can be a little helpful, but thats just me i guess.

I second that snowdog. If you passed..you passed!!! Pat yourself on the back and get ready for the next phase. Having gone through the process (waiting on psych) let me tell you...if you think waiting to see if you passed the written stressed you out..that ain't nothing compared to the QAP and background portion. I think I lost some hair during the last few months. I'm not trying to act like a 'know-it-all' but there will be plenty of other things to stress over. Those who passed, great job..those who fell shy, try again..good luck to all!!!!!!

Oh and make sure to bring a rag to wipe the sweat from your forehead during the QAP
