I pass by the CHP office in San Francisco everyday when I drive home from work. I actually saw the CHP motorcycle on the back of a tow truck and another tow truck parking the Ford Ranger in front of the office.

OAKLAND -- A CHP motorcycle officer received minor injuries after a high-speed chase that started as a narcotics stop in Oakland turned into a major police action that temporarily closed the upper deck of the Bay Bridge Wednesday afternoon as the evening commute got underway.

San Francisco firefighters responded to the crash scene to assist the CHP motorcycle officer.

The crash scene is on the westbound deck of the bridge near the Treasure Island tunnel, according to a San Francisco Fire Department dispatcher.

San Francisco fire engines came east in the westbound lanes to reach the officer, he said.

CHP spokesman Sean Chase explained that the incident began when Oakland police approached a a Ford Ranger with two individuals suspected of a narcotics violation in the Fruitvale District.

The suspects fled, getting on northbound Interstate 880 at Broadway while allegedly throwing items out of the window as the chase progressed down the freeway. Police asked for CHP assistance with officers becoming involved in the chase at the Treasure Island tunnel.

Oakland police made the decision to disable the suspect vehicle, according to Chase. Authorities are still uncertain if it was the disabled vehicle or a police car that hit the CHP officer, forcing him to lay his motorcycle down.

The CHP officer suffered minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital to be examined, Chase told reporters.

According to Chase, the two people in the Ford Ranger were taken into custody at the scene.

Police activity continues on the bridge and three lanes remained closed for another hour after the incident began, causing major problems for what has developed into a nightmare evening commute. Chase expects that traffic issues will linger in the approach to the Bay Bridge for the next several hours.
