Hello All,
Firs off, I want to thank all the members in this forum for providing such an effective and informative service for all of us CHP Wanna Bes.
I have a question regarding the initial duty assignment..
Currently I am in a dilema between the jointing CHP or the San Diego Sheriff. Both offer exciting careers and I would love to work for both agencies.
If I was single I would join the CHP in a hearbeat. However, I am married and do have to think about my family. We have a new home in Carlsbad that we love and we really would not like to move from it. My wife has a full time job and I have a 3 year old daugher attending day care.
Now I say again, I completely understand that the needs of the department come first before anything else and I may be sent to farthest station from home.
But beside that, what is the likelyhood of getting stationed in San Diego county as a rookie?
Have there been any openings for trainees in San Diego lately?
If very unlikely, this is for current CHP officers, what could the "waiting period" for a new office to transfer to San Diego/Oceanside/San Onofre? 1 year? 2 years? 5 years?
Maybe there is an active CHP officer here how went through this already and knows the answer
Well, however it turns out I guess I may have to sacrifice location to have a great job with the CHP I am just hoping there is some chance of getting a station close to home. Thank you all for your support, have a good day.
Carlos
I'm sure someone from the area can provide better information, but I remember classmates going to San Diego with 2-3 years on, don't know if it is still that way. San Diego proper doesn't take Cadets often, but there may be other offices within the 1-hour MapQuest range that your home ownership would help with.
Anyone...?

In the Oceanside Office the lowest is like 2 to 4 years if your lucky form what I here it used to be like 6 or 7. I think El Cajon took one last class not sure. San Onofre must be Commerical Officer.

We have at least one going to San Diego this next volume transfer. 176?? is his ID#. Puts him with like 1.5 years on the job now I guess. You can never really tell when your going to be able to get to where you want to go. Things change on a daily basis and then when the transfer list finally comes out, your name isn't on it. It's happened.
San Diego occasionally gets trainees. Oceanside has taken only three trainees in the last 22 years....but they took 13 of them in the two graduating classes before that! El Cajon very occasionally gets them. Temecula has NEVER taken a trainee in the 20-year history of the office. You'd stand a much better chance of going to Santa Ana, Westminster or one of the LA offices and just coping with the commute for a couple years until you can get closer to home. If you're bilingual, it can greatly shorten the time, as bilingual transfers (if the office has a bilingual opening) supersede seniority. There are many young officers commuting from north San Diego county to Orange and LA counties, just doing their time until they get enough seniority to transfer "back home". San Diego will be your best bet, you should be able to get in there with around 2 years on....El Cajon would probably be the next best bet, with Oceanside usually taking longer - but as Lomotor said, it's all a crapshoot. You put your transfer in after your year of probation and hope for the best....sometimes a freak slot will open up and you'll slide in quickly, other times you'll end up waiting a while.

I know a current officer that is fresh out of the academy that resided in the San Diego area prior to joining. There weren't any openings available to cadets in the SD area, so he had no choice but to take West LA. He is single and does not own property, but you however stated you own a home and have dependants in SD... so I believe you can automatically get into an office no further than 45 minutes away from your residence, drive time verified by a supervisor.

AFAIK, there's nothing "automatic" about it. It's taken into consideration when assignments are made, but nothing is guaranteed.

that would be taken into consideration if that area was accepting graduating cadets

You will have preference with a home or school-aged children IF, and only IF, there is an office within 60 minutes, per MapQuest, that is accepting new offices. If you live in Yreka, you're out of luck -- they're not going to make an opening just for you.

Reviving this old thread... I'm wondering what the definition of "School-Aged Children" is? Does the child need to be old enough to be in school or actually be attending school?
Thanks all

Initially I thought "what a dumb question". But after some thought, it's actually a very good question.
I believe the correct answer is the child must be enrolled in school because they are trying to avoid displacing the family and their living circumstances.

Like what was posted earlier, it depends on where bodies are needed at the time. You can forget about Castaic IF and LACC. There is rarely a shortage of open spots in metro areas. Like many people have told you before, don't worry about this kind of stuff right now. You need to put forth max effort in school and staying out of trouble. You are at least 7 years away from being able to apply, let alone worrying about where you will end up if you complete Academy training.

You won't be LACC or the Castaic Inspection Facility out of Academy...or ever, at the former, unless you can't hack it as an officer.
As for the other places...this question has been asked approximately one million times. Nobody knows what offices will be taking new officers eight or nine years from now (when you graduate), so giving you the odds are impossible. However, based on previous classes, it's pretty likely you'd be able to come back to So Cal.
