I know common sense dictates that an applicant needs to wear appropriate business attire during the QAP. I am still active duty military and I am curious what the majority thinks about wearing the Dress Uniform. I dont want to come off strong or like I am trying to get a heads up somewhere. Is it fair or is it to much?

It has been a long time since I had to deal with anything like that. Speaking as a nearly 60 year old former military and career CHP guy, if I were on your QAP and you were crisply and properly attired in military dress uniform I would probably grade you higher or perhaps cut you some slack.
The other side of the coin is some leftover hippie from the 60's is now my age and might be on your panel too. Along with all of his/her preconceived ideas about the military. Doubtful, but could hapen. I worked with plenty of reformed hippies during my career. Some state employees really are not reformed hippies, they just got haircuts and suits and jobs. On weekends they still smoke dope and hate the "man".
If I were you I would invest in a conservative suit for any of this, but I hope you get some input from folks like Mentor, Mac and others who are closer to the scene.
I did know an officer who wore his Class A CHP uniform to a Sergeant's Oral panel and he did not make the cut. He was the only one who went in uniform too.

During my QAP, other applicants were in military Dress A uniforms. I think it looks great! I think it truly shows who you are, what you represent and that you are proud of it. You also get a chance to show you know how to spit shine a good shoe and polish your brass. Obviously, you get the bonus points w/ or w/o the uniform but I think it looks sharp and makes a positive statement.

I wore my Class A's when I took the QAP. They love seeing that and it tells the panel so much about you; remember first impressions . . . When I went in I was a 1st Class PO over 8 and they loved seeing the ribbons, the rank designator, and the hash marks. It spurred more positive questions from the civilian and really created a repoire with the sergeant. So few of our prior military are from the USCG it really does cause more questions. The USCG mission more closely relates to the CHP (Safety, Service, and Security) than other branches. If you're on active duty then by all means, wear your dress blues!

Can anyone tell me how the vision test is completed and when? Done at the physical. How? Standard vision test and standard color test that I myself have done on more then one occasion and not for LE jobs.
