Just out of curiosity, are there any officers that have 10851 pins on this forum?: I actually met an officer that had one the other day. (I was not on a traffic stop) I actually had a flat tire and the officer pulled over to assist.
How is it possible to keep running into stolen vehicles, and then catch the criominals in the act? There are so many vehicles on the road...

I work for a PD in the South East Los Angeles area.
I have received the 10851 pin two times in the last 2 years.
Most of my GTA's are just from simple traffic stops.

Believe it or not, 24 10851 awards. The CHP's first Master (5 time) award winner. I also coordinated the entire program for Los Angeles County from 1996 until 2003 while also working MAIT.
When I got my first roller it came back hot with the suspect standing right next to me. I just did what I was trained to do.
My personal records:
7 recoveries in one day
5 rollers in one month
26 recoveries in one month
127 recoveries in one year
I need to add that all of this was done while working patrol in beautiful East LA:cool:

I'm far from the first recipient, but have the Master 10851 pin also.

Impressive!
My nephew graduated from the LAPD Academy late last year and (no surprise) drew his first duty working nights in Southeast LA. Last week he got to enjoy one particular shift of firsts:
1. first time driving
2. first roller
3. first high-speed pursuit
4. first foot chase
5. first 10851 collar
His FTO told him it won't be his last there!

First time I ever had a roller on my own was sitting at a stop light running the plates of cars around me, probably 2 weeks off the FTO program.. I got the return.....looked at it.....ran it again to be sure.....then Dispatch called me to make sure I copied the hit......and then I had them read the plate back just to make sure I hadn't switched numbers or anything. Then I had to force myself to take a deep breath because I thought I was going to jump out of my skin.....
My second unit pulled in behind about a block away. High Risk Vehicle stop.....One in custody....

What's the differance between a roller and a recovery?

Roller = occupied and being driven or parked
Recovery = unoccupied and parked or abandoned or in pieces

I've received 3 pins in the past year.....Auto theft is out of control in the Central Valley.

All I have to say is whoa...how often do the rollings become hot pursuits?

I'm coming up on my one year, and I have four rollers, and about 10 recoveries. None of my rollers ended up in a pursuit. Two, I already had the guy in custody for different offenses. Another, was a 79 year old man, which I had already had detained because he had cold plated the vehicle and the plate returned expired only so I was inventorying the vehicle to have it impounded when I discovered the VIN didn't match what I was told. Ran the VIN and got a hit. I work in a pretty desolate area though, so it's not like the LA offices. 99% of the pursuits here end up off road about 30 seconds into it.

If you are just interested in a stat, write "stopped car, ran plate, returned stolen, arrested driver." If you want that person to actually be convicted and get a strike, you need to do some investigating. You need to show that the person you stopped actually stole the car and that they didn't borrow it from the thief, or buy if from someone who needed drug money, etc., etc., etc. It's up to you.

No, I think I found three together, and the other four scattered around beat 1 in ELA. I worked beat 1 (surface street area) so much and knew it so well, I could recognize a car that didn't belong in the area. Also, after my combat shooting involving a "cold plated" stolen, I memorized what year that each series license plate was issued. That was important because an old car can have a newly issued license plate, but a new car can never have an old series plate. I got a lot of rollers that way. It also doesn't hurt when a car thief puts a plate that is only supposed to be on a truck on the car he just stole. Finding stolens is like any other job on the CHP. It you are really interested, then apply yourself, learn as much as you can, and go to it. You can apply that work ethic to stolens, to drunks, to accident investigation, to teaching at the Academy, whatever. You don't have to just "write tickets."
I finally got enough to get my pin. The area I work, stolens are far a few between. Recoveries are also not very normal. I submitted the paperwork to Central Division in June last year and still havn't got anything back. Oh well. I arrest more people for drug sales than I do vehicle theft. Guess if I worked one of the other Valley areas I would be swimming in stolens.

I'm a PD officer in the Central Valley and in two years I have been on I have had 3 rollin' stolen's and recovered about 10.
The first time I heard "xxxx clear to copy" after I ran a 28 I about jumped through my windshield. Felony take down, found a machete in center consol (occupied by 3) and a 8 month pregnant women high on meth.
The second time it was a car full of high ranking Nortenos from Avenal. They leg bailed, but I caught the driver...eh em w/ just enough force to effect the arrest.
Third time it was motorcycle with a PAL onboard....
Recovered one my last shift....ended up with a ADAM on that one as well.....
Know your beat/city and they will come. Like someone else said if it don't look like it belongs in the area/don't recognize it then it probably don't. Through experience and luck you will have your share.
We don't get pins either, I think they look nice and professional and would vote for the POA to bring it up...doubtful though.
I'm sure if my main focus was traffic I would have a ton more, however, poor me (lol) I have to respond to barking dogs, 484's, 470's, and other pain the butt calls.
