Hey I'm thrilled to find this site! I hope you guys and gals can help with my questions.

I am restoring a 1962 Peterbilt. I have HV plates on it and do ocasionally take it to car/ truck/Toys for tots type of shows.

I do NOT make any money with the truck. Since I have had it I have not pulled a trailer with it.

On my day's off I have been taking it to my work where I can work on it with the proper tools and on a cement floor vs dirt at home. So no place to store it at work and no place to work on it at home

Can I get in trouble for driving it to work on my day off since I'm not going to a car show? As I read the Ca stuff regarding the plates no. It says "Primarily used for exibitions" and not "Only".

Also on May 6 of this year there will be an Antique truck show at March AFB in Riverside. Can I legaly pull a empty trailer to the show and home?

The truck has no air ride and is quite bone jarring w/o any weight on the rear axles, plus as an added safety thing it would stop much faster if the need should arise.

BTW I do have a curant Class A CDL and Med card.

Thx, Chris

Here's my take on it from reading section 5004 VC: Since you're driving it to/from your workplace for the primary purpose of repairing/restoring it, I'd think it would fall within the legislative intent of "....primarily for the use of historical exhibition or other similar purpose".

As far as pulling the trailer to an antique truck show, I don't see a problem there as long as you're not driving for hire, which you're obviously not within that context.

Keep in mind that there's no crystal-clear mandate on that section - but I'd think that any reasonable officer (CHP or otherwise) would see it as I outlined it above. I'm not speaking as a Departmental representative here, and my opinion is worth exactly what you paid for it.

Ya I'm hoping that the guys at the Cajon scales will realize that I'm going to the show. I forgot to mention that the trailer is registered as comercial and is used almost daily. Wonder how that effects things?

I just don't want to get into trouble or get a huge fine.

Shouldn't have any effect as long as it's empty and you're not driving for hire.

If you want to make sure, call the scales and run it by them ahead of time. I'm sure they'd answer your questions and get you squared away.
