View Full Version : Driving with a dog on your lap

This evening I was stopped at a red light and saw that one of the drivers going through the intersection from the cross street had a dog on their lap hanging its head out the window.
This is isn't this first time I've seen that, I actually see it on a pretty regular basis, and it's kinda scary having to share the road with people doing things like that. :biggrin:shock:ubt:
I already know it's a bad idea, (that's pretty obvious) but is it legal to drive with a dog on your lap?

It is not specifically illegal, but if the dog creates an unsafe condition there may be a violation of 22350 VC, the basic speed law.

21701?????????

21701?????????
Close !
21700VC would be more proper I think. 21701VC is about a person. A dog is in all sense and purposes property only. 21700VC mentions when the vehicle is so loaded as to obstruct the drivers view or operation of the vehicle.
21701VC is talking about a person willfully interfering with the driver or mechanisms of the vehicle itself while in operation.

I took a crash on Christmas Day where a guy had been driving around with his poodle on his lap. Unfortunately, the window was down when he TC'ed and the dog got ejected. The result was poodle-spread. Though I'm not partial to poodles, it was still sad to see a guy lose his dog on Christmas. He wanted to take it with him, so I wrapped what was left in a fatal-blanket and stuck it in a box he had in his SUV.

we had a pooch get ejected from a motor recently...the ol' stand on the tank routine (until the CD got in the way)
..and I have wanted SO badly to write "22350 - Dog" when I see that. someday...someday...

He really wanted his dog? Or was that a joke...?

I've written this before on more than one occasion. I always cite 22350. Never gone to court. What's the safe speed for driving with a dog in your lap? 0 mph.

Doesn't matter is she is a dog or a fox, if you can't keep it straight and at the speed limit, you are going to get a ticket.
Case closed.............

I'm serious. He waited until we finished investigating the crash, stopped traffic, and I shovelled his dog to the shoulder. I then wrapped it up and gave it to him (he was waiting about sixty yards away), recommending that he just bury the dog inside the blanket and not open it up.
The pooch would have been AOK-9 if he didn't try to flea the scene.

23112,did this happen on Christmas just passed? Hey if I owned a dog killed in a TC I think I'd want to take it home as well. This may sound crazy but I've seen car seats for dogs. Matter of fact my sister-in-law has one for her pooch. Dog looks funny as hell sittin' in the thing but it works.

Now that's motorist service 23112. Shovel...yes. Wrap up...no. Here's your yellow blanket, sir.
The dog harnesses that attach to the seatbelt are great. My dog can still move around a bit and doesn't have a problem with it. I think most people that drive with the dogs on their lap are the ones who treat them like their kids and just think it's cute, but don't consider how they can interfere with driving.

I can't help but think about what happens when you get into a wreck and the airbag goes off while a dog is on your lap. That's gotta be nasty.

My dog is my only child. While he doesn't get in my lap (at his size, that would be, uh, hairy), he'll sometimes sit in the back (I drive an extended cab pickup, so sitting in the back seat still has you in on the action up front) and be all puppy-dog-ish over my shoulder. It can hinder my steering a bit.
But ususally it's just us in the car, so he mainly sticks to the front passenger seat. Whenever I have to slam on my breaks, I stick my right arm out to keep him from flying. Anyone know where I get this doggie harness? My boy is MY LIFE!
I recently dog-sat 'little white dog,' a Westie. Little white dog kept insisting on riding on my lap! GRRR! (of course she was too tiny to jump into my pickup...man, white dogs can't jump!)

Yeah, it happened this Christmas. I love dogs, but have little respect for poodles. Nonetheless, I felt pretty for the guy, because I know how dogs become part of the family.

At Basic AI, our instructor showed us a TC report from Santa Ana PD, where P-1 stated she crashed because she was unable to apply the brake due to the fact that her (rat) dog was stuck under the brake pedal?
Bad dog Fluffy, bad dog!

[thread hijack] IIRC, Tom Selleck went through basic at Fort Ord, which is in your neck of the woods. [/thread hijack]
