I don't want to detail anything about the incident, but I'll post a follow up once I see it hit the paper. It occurred less than 1/8 of a mile from my station. H-20 and BCSO's H-1 are flying search patterns over my station so it's kind of hard to sleep. The Deputy is stable, and will most likely be fine, but let's pray for him and his family.

OROVILLE ? A man suspected of shooting a Butte County sheriff's deputy is still at large, despite an hour-long ground and helicopter search in the Oroville Wildlife Area Sunday morning, according to the Butte County Sheriff's Office.
Deputy Jason Louis was shot in the leg by a suspect he had stopped at the area late Saturday night. Louis is expected to be released from Enloe Medical Center in Chico this afternoon.
A Sheriff's Office press release described the suspect as a white man of medium build, approximately 6 feet tall. He was last seen wearing dark pants, a dark green Army-style jacket, a dark hooded sweatshirt and dark gloves.
The full story will appear in Monday's edition.
Best wishes to Deputy Louis for a speedy and full recovery!

Butte Co. S.O. has had several shootings in the past several years. My uncle is a BCSO deputy and his partner, Randy Jennings, was shot and killed back in 1997. Since then, they've lost other deputies and one LT. I was relieved to hear the deputy in this case is going to recover. Butte is a deceptively rural county with a reputation for some serious original gangsters.

OROVILLE -- A man suspected of shooting a sheriff's deputy is still at large after an hour-long ground and helicopter search of the Oroville Wildlife Area on Sunday left Butte County Sheriff's deputies empty-handed.
Deputies combed deep, brushy gullies as a helicopter circled close by at an area west of the Feather River, about a mile from where Deputy Jason Louis, 35, was shot in the leg while wrestling his handgun from the suspect.
The shooting occurred shortly after 10:13 p.m. Saturday, after Louis stopped a man walking at the wildlife area, near Oro Dam Boulevard.
Law enforcement officers from the Sheriff's Office, Oroville and Chico Police, and California Highway Patrol responded three minutes later when a call came from Louis stating he'd been shot. They conducted a massive search of the area Saturday night, but were unable to locate the assailant.
Sunday morning, deputies and other area officers resumed searching the south area of the county at around 5:30 a.m.
Search activity heightened and the helicopter was dispatched around 10:40 a.m. when the Sheriff's Office received a report from Oroville Police saying the suspect was seen near Stuart Road, said deputy Jesse Nicholaw, a SWAT team member.
"Evidently, someone on the other side of the river saw someone hiding and called us. We haven't been able to find him," Nicholaw said.
Butte Sheriff's Sgt. Michael Hannah said at least five people had been questioned and photographed. They were questioned because they wore the type of clothing the suspect was last seen wearing.
"Everybody has been cooperative," Hannah said.
Hannah said he doesn't know why Louis stopped the suspect. He said the shooting occurred after an altercation ensued between the deputy and suspect. The suspect somehow managed to remove Louis's .45-caliber handgun from its holster. As the two struggled, the gun discharged, sending the bullet through Louis's upper thigh.
Hannah said the suspect fled on foot. Authorities recovered the weapon, but Hannah indicated the suspect is considered dangerous.
"A person who is willing to shoot an officer is willing to shoot a civilian," he said.
Sunday's search of the wildlife area was called off around noon.
Hannah said authorities don't know who the suspect is, and are asking the public for assistance in locating the assailant. He's described as a white man of medium build, about 6 feet tall. The suspect was wearing dark-colored pants, a dark green army-style jacket, a dark hooded sweatshirt and dark gloves.
Louis was expected to be released from Enloe Medical Center in Chico late Sunday afternoon.
Anyone with information about the suspect or the incident is asked to call the Sheriff's Office at 538-7322.

There is a rather large Norteno, Sureno (SP?) influence. Add that to the economically depressed citizens of South County, and the small time drug/arms dealers, it makes for an interesting community to serve in.

An Oroville parolee faces more than 30 years in prison if convicted of charges filed Tuesday in connection with the wounding of a Butte County sheriff's deputy with his own gun. Edward Peter Ferreira Jr., 25, was arraigned in Superior Court on multiple charges stemming from the Dec. 30 shooting of deputy Jason Louis in a wildlife area west of Oroville.
Ferreira was being sought at the time for allegedly failing to appear in court on drug and resisting arrest charges.
According to prosecutors, Louis, a four-year veteran sheriff's deputy, was attempting to question Ferreira when the suspect allegedly removed the officer's handgun from his holster.
During a struggle over the weapon, the officer reportedly suffered a single gunshot wound to the thigh, which has sidelined Louis from his police duties since.
Ferreira was charged Tuesday with assault on a peace officer causing great bodily injury, taking the deputy's gun, possession of a firearm by a felon, committing a crime while out on bail or own recognizance and having two prior prison terms on his record.
He is also charged with failing to appear in court in his underlying drug case just prior to the deputy's shooting.
Ferreira, who did not enter a plea to the
charges Tuesday, was arrested earlier this month in Montana.
His girlfriend, Joeann Lee Fite, 22, is facing an accessory charge in the case.
A preliminary hearing for Fite Tuesday was postponed after her court-appointed attorney declared a conflict because he may have once defended a witness with whom Fite and Ferreira reportedly were staying in Montana prior to their capture.

STRIKE THREE????????????
Possibly the reason for shooting at the Officer. Gotta say, if anything, reading these stories and watching cops and those shows that involve cops it just shows me the reality of police work.
I would always watch these shows and read these articles without any attachment at all, but when you condition your mind towards the goal of becoming an Officer, it all starts sinking in. The excitement of working towards the goal is sometimes overshadowed by the fear of the unknown, for me anyway. Its a careful dance between fear and excitement which fuels my desire for becoming Law Enforcement. :razz:
Looks like I went off the deep end there a bit lol - sorry guys. I'm sure you get my point,

Ahhhhh....yet another sterling example of our "justice" system at it's finest! I'll bet he was paroled early for good behavior, too........
I'll be working the Oroville area come May 31st. Good thing they caught the guy.
