View Full Version : Pull-ups at the academy
I was wondering if there is a minimum amount of pull-ups each person must be able to complete in the CHP academy.
No... Though being able to do 10 pull-ups upon entry to the Academy is recommended.
Also, if someone is not really good at pull-ups is there an alternative to that portion such as showing the ability to jump and get over fences or pull themselves over walls, fences, etc? Thanks
Ummmm... No. (You'll complete different obstacle courses whether you excel at pull-ups or not.)

Do the standards require pull ups, (palm out), or chin ups? (Palm in)
thanks,

Thanks for the clarification?Initially I was under the impression that if you were not able to do a certain amount of pull-ups, you would perhaps fail a portion of PT requirements.

You have to be able to get at least one of your chins over the bar... If you need help they can hold a Snickers over the bar for you.
They are pull-ups, palm out.

OK...time for a little CHP trivia; Who said this?
...You used to have to do 4 pull-ups just to get here!...
The prize for the winner will not consist of money...but on your death bed you will receive total Consciousness...so you got that going for you.
It will probably help if you wear a uniform to answer this question...;)

Just a wild guess, but I remember correctly Danny Gilmore.

If you have more than one chin...maybe you should consider alternate employment!
Yzeman..thanks for the Caddyshack reference as well!

Correct....in the old "Telling It Like It Is" video (circa 1979-80). I remember it well.....we must've heard that video echoing from "the pit" next to the staff office a thousand times while we went through the Academy! IMO that was the CLASSIC CHP recruitment video!
"...It's a physical job, people!...and unless you're in better shape than that con in the joint who's pumping iron eight hours a day, just waiting for the opportunity to rip your head off and throw it in the iceplant - you're gonna have to work EX-TRA HARD!!!..."
"...If you want to whine and cry, you go to the Staff Office and sign out....we will not sympathize with you here. You're gonna work. IS THAT UNDERSTOOD?!?"...

They said only 8 hours back then? Now they say all day, which is the truth! Nothing else to do in the joint except___.
I spent 2 years trying to get those pull-ups. Never got them, reported without them. Had an interesting episode on shirt-taking day (do they have a bonfire for the left behind shirts of us non-hackers? ). I was ok on the floor exersize & one of the few not sent to the front. One of the PT staff came up to me & started condascending-complimenting me on making it, then started scream-asking if I could do 4 pull-ups. 'Sir, cadet blue nasty, no sir!' He blew up at that response, going on about how that doesn't motivate him. 'Uh, sir, cadet blue nasty, no sir???' Wrong again, for he was the one asking the questions, not I! So I said 'Sir, cadet blue nasty, I have worked hard to get those chin ups, but not hard enough, and I would like to tell you that I can do 4, but that would be a lie, and I do not tolerate lies, SIR!' Well, turns out I couldn't even jump high enough to grab the stinkin bar! Having fellow cadets help with chin-ups wasn't embarassing, but the boost up was, and I'm not a shorty either!
Apparently I gave the right answer...later the academy Lt. told me the PT staff was impressed with my honest Abe response:biggrin:

Pull-up are about .01% of your PT workout. Worry about running, push-ups and sit-ups............o yeah and the nose in the rings.
