Do any CHP personnel have take home cars? What specialized units and ranks?
The resident post folks take their cars home as do the ISU (Auto theft), Chiefs, Captains and some division personnel. Motors take their bikes home....I'm probably missing a few but, in general, thats it.
Add canine officers to the list.

Investigative Services UnitThey Have that?!!! I didn't know that...do they get to investigate more than stolen vehicles? Does ISU ever get to do undercover operations...?
If they do...what do the operations entail...I'm not trying to get detailed info, just a broad overview of what ISU does...
Pretty much everything you could imagine a police officer could be involved in investigating. They work general investigative work, drugs, smuggling, port of entry theft, vehicle theft, chop shops, comlicated hit and run cases, workers comp fraud, gangs, shootings and other various crimes that happen on the freeway. Alot of times these units assist and or take over a complex investigation an officer starts and can not finish due to lack of time, knowledge and or resources. We have Memorandums of Understandings with allied agaencies that dictate what crimes the CHP will handle that vary from area to area and from different divisions. There are not many people assigned to ISU and for some it is a saught after position.
Hope this answers your question.
Does ISU do Internal Invesagations on officers?

Does ISU do Internal Invesagations on officers?
Negative. Internal Affairs fulfills that glorious job (all IA investigators are sergeants). ISU is normally into major auto theft (chop shops), support field personell who come across big cases, and handle anything unusual that comes down the pipe. Auto theft-specific units are subject to undercover grooming standards. If narcotics is your thing you have to find your way into a unified narcotics task force (again, undercover grooming standards apply.

Could you elaborate on what you mean by undercover grooming standards?
They grow those cool mullets or shave their heads, ugly gottees, show off or get tattoos and drive crappy cars. IN other words, they don't have to look like an officer ie., clean shaven, no piercing' s or tattoos and an approved haircut.
I guess they can still wear the fanny pack though.

I think CHPguy was referring to Mobile Road Enforcement commercial officers. In which case, that is correct.

Sorry "YM", "x MAIT" was correct to assume that I was referring to the civilian position. Although if you refer to the original
question of the post "Do any CHP personnel have take home cars? What specialized units and ranks?" I do believe civilian
Motor Carriers fall into that bracket. My dad's a civilian Motor Carrier, and that damn white van has been in my driveway for
all 19 years of my life, 24 total so far.
Thanks for the backup though, "YM"

That's a good point to bring up CHPguy. We have many civilian positions which include non-uniformed commanders in HQ units. Some section commanders are referred to as, "Chief equivalent." There are numerous civilian positions which are given the authority of uniformed manager. All of the ones I know of are only in the management ranks. Anyway, many of them have take-home cars; particularly section commanders. I've never heard of a MCS having one but then again I've never worked at a scales facility.
