California Highway Patrol Officer Kevin Berg, of Ukiah, was one of 42 California state employees to receive the Medal of Valor from Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger Tuesday.
"These brave men and women come from different departments and agencies within our state government, but what they all have in common is their incredible bravery," Schwarzenegger said.
Berg received the medal for his actions Sept. 12, 2004, when, while off-duty, he jumped in to save a woman who was being attacked by a large dog in the parking lot of Safeway in Fort Bragg.
Berg was also recognized as Officer of the Year in 2005, for that and other actions taken in the course of duty.
The Medal of Valor is the highest honor California can award its public servants and is given to those who demonstrate acts of extraordinary bravery and heroism to save another person's life.
Since 1959, California has awarded 388 medals to state employees. Recipients are nominated by the departments where they work.
Other recipients include CHP Sgt. Raymond Faulk, who rescued a woman who was attempting to commit suicide by jumping off a freeway overcrossing in 2003; Michael Houser and David Raymond of the Department of Alcoholic Beverages Control, who rescued a young man from being kidnapped, choked and robbed in 2003; and Patti West of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, who led seven firefighters to safety during the sudden flare-up of a wildfire in 2004
"That's so cool...I went to the CHP website and read all the recipients of the Medal of Valor, it's really cool... "
