First off, this is an outstanding forum and thanks to all those involved in putting it together. My question is does the CHP offer any type of internships or student worker positions besides the explorer program?

Glad to have you here, rich.

We do not have any formal internship program... That said, an "internship" is how I got started with the Department. By the time I realized this was what I wanted to do, I was too old to be an Explorer. I called around and was able to work out an internship-type arrangement where I helped out with projects (mainly database creation & public affairs) and was able to go on some ride-alongs and get experience with the Department. It's really going to depend on the specific Area Commander, if they will even entertain the idea.

If I were you, I'd put something together in writing about what you'd like to do, so you have something to present. It won't hurt anything to call your local offices and ask. Worst they can say is "go away."

dw, that's interesting that you mention database creation. I'm currently majoring in Business Administration with a concentration in Information Systems. In order to obtain my degree, I have to complete a senior project - usually something done in a business or government setting. I've been thinking about contacting some local LE agencies around here and seeing if any of them need any technical projects done.

Who did you speak to about setting up an arrangement such as that?

I just called offices and bothered them until someone listened to me. I think I got some college credit for the project(s) as well.

If you call the Division offices you will have a far better chance. I know that we have interns here in Central Div. Not 100% on what capacity they are working but I met one of them just last week. I was actually shocked to see an intern. Oh well, I think its a good thing, maybe they will do more of it.

Thanks dw and CC. I guess it's a good thing I live in the same city that the Coastal Division offices are located. I'll see what I can dig up.
