The short answer to your question is??Yes?. Does that help? Seriously though, when a child reaches either of the two?6 years old OR 60 lbs, they are no longer legally required to be restrained in a child restraint seat. For example: If a 5 year old child weighs in at 65 lbs, they are no longer legally required to be in a child restraint seat; If a 6 year old child weighs in at 50 lbs, they also are no longer legally required to be in a child restraint seat. You notice I placed emphasis on ?no longer legally required?, that is because it is suggested that your child remain in the seat for as long as the manufacture?s specifications will allow (my daughter used a high back booster seat until she was 11, because it placed her high into the belt path and provided extra head and neck protection). What is still pretty obvious, but very important is they are still legally required to be properly restrained with the vehicle's properly functioning seatbelt.
As far as the ?Front seat ? Back seat? issue, the link ?cal911gal? provided says it all. Basically, if your child is legally required to be in a child restraint seat, they can?t ride in the front seat. There are however several exceptions to this law?they are all explained in cal911gal?s link. If you have any further questions or concerns, you can call your local CHP Office and they can put you in contact with an Officer who can answer your specific questions and even check your child seat out.
Hope this helps!
