A Michigan State Police trooper on Monday shot and wounded a Van Buren County man who police say ran away after a traffic stop in Bangor Township and got hold of the officer's Taser stun gun during an ensuing struggle.
The trooper, whose name was not released, has been placed on administrative leave pending the conclusion of an investigation, said Lt. Mike Harvitt of the Michigan State Police South Haven Post.
The trooper stopped a car at 6:15 p.m. near the intersection of county roads 687 and 376, police said in a news release. The man, whose name was not released, fled on foot after the traffic stop. The trooper chased him and attempted to fire a Taser stun gun.
Harvitt said a struggle took place about 50 yards from the traffic stop. Troopers said in a news release the man got the officer's stun gun, so the trooper fired his service weapon, striking the man once in the head and once in the hip, Harvitt said.
The man was taken to Bronson Methodist Hospital for treatment and was in the hospital's intensive-care unit this morning, Harvitt said. The trooper was treated for minor injuries at Borgess Medical Center and released.
Harvitt said the man, whose age was not known this morning, was wanted on a warrant.
