Child Dies, Eight Injured In San Leandro Pileup

POSTED: 8:18 am PST November 13, 2006

SAN LEANDRO -- As investigation continued Monday into a tragic multi-car wreck that killed a 4-year-old girl and injured as many as eight others in a three-car pileup on southbound Interstate Highway 880 in San Leandro.

CHP officers originally thought the crash just north of Washington Avenue around 8:10 p.m. Sunday was between just two cars, a Toyota sport utility vehicle carrying a man, woman and three children from Fremont, and a Mitsubishi Galant carrying two young adults.

But a preliminary report released Monday morning shows a Ford Mustang sparked the fatal crash when its 21-year-old driver lost control driving northbound and crashed into the Mitsubishi, flipping it into the air and into opposite lanes of traffic.

That's when the Mitsubishi hit the Toyota Sequoia and both cars overturned. "At least one of the children was ejected," Officer Paul Cheever said, likely including the 4-year-old Fremont girl who died in the crash.

Six others were sent to the hospital with major injuries, including two girls ages 6 and 9, according to Officer. J. Militar.

The Toyota's other occupants were 40-year-old Amy Cheok and 49-year-old Honwai Cheng, both also of Fremont.

Warren Yam, a 22-year-old New York man, and Rosalyn Lau, a 22-year-old Union City woman, were in the Mitsubishi.

The two 21-year-olds in the Mustang suffered less serious injuries, according to the CHP.

The accident shut the freeway's southbound lanes for more than an hour and a half until just before 10 p.m.

bet the four-year-old wasn't in a proper carseat. man, that torques me. so sad and so unnecessary.

there was an accident on the 15 near bakersfield last month. eight people in a seven seater expedition. two one-year-olds, a five-year-old, and an eight-year-old. none of the kids were belted, there was only one carseat (they needed three), and the lone carseat wasn't even being used. three of the kids died, i think the youngest three. so, so sad.
