I was curious if cadets can swap their assignments. What I'm talking about is can a cadet who got East L.A., but wanted Oakland, swap with another cadet who has Oakland but wants L.A. I know that I did that while I was in the military. They didn't care for it much but if is something that would make it easier for people can a two or three way swap be done in the academy. Or is it the kind of thing that it's written in stone and there's no changing it?

You go where you are assigned!!!

You will go to the assignment that is next to your name when the list is posted. If you don't like what you got, you suck it up, do your year and put in your transfer.
The scenario that you posed is fairly unlikely to happen though. If I recall correctly, most cadets in my class got one of their top choices.

If you want LA first and put Oakland last, and someone wants the opposite and does their list correctly, there will be no need to swap. Beauty of the system.

The only reason why asked that question was becasue I don't know how exactly the CHP does thier assignments. I'm sure everyone wants to get as close to home as possible but I have no problem going where I'm assigned. I'm sure that a lot of cadets don't get something that is that close to home so a preference would be next such as the L.A. area over the bay area would make things a lot easy or they just feel more comfortable in a certain geographic area. Me personally I live down in the L.A. area for over 20 years and know the area very well whereas I have never been to bay area I would probably get lost my first day::lol:

You would be in decent shape since you are commutable to about a dozen offices in the L.A. area. Its the people that live at the extremes like El Centro, Redding or Visalia that don't get very close to home right out of the gate.

I was an ambulance driver in the LA area for two years, and I lived in the area my whole life and my FTO still got me lost on the first day... in my own neighborhood!

That officer was assigned to the area just south of me, and we were just perplexed why someone would go through camp snoopy and deal with all of that for seven months and then just 10-22 their career; such is the way of things.

Very true, and from a wife's perspective, it seems like a pretty nice place to be assigned! But, he's the only one who knows (and fully understands) his decision... so life goes on.

it's interesting that you say, "from a wife's perspective." from the horse's mouth, it was the wife who had a problem with it and the decision to quit was made while still at the academy. i wonder if there wasn't a sense of pride involved in quitting the academy versus quitting after graduation or if it was just that the realtor's license hadn't come in yet, or what. tax dollars hard at work... i'd rather someone quit early on than milk the system. no integrity.
