This is a great site. Lots of information to gain from here. I think I have read every subject on all 27 pages! I just decided tonight to become a member cuz I cant get my QAP meeting out of my mind.
So, I just had my QAP last Tuesday (10/17/06) Inland Division. I was told it would take 2-3 weeks to get the results. I went into the meeting thinking I was going to be in there for all 45 minuets, but was out of there in no more than 20 min. I felt I did very well. Answered every question with confidence and had eye contact the entire time. I felt very prepared for the interview. I really feel I did my job preparing myself.
However, I wish I would have been able to tell then a little more about who I am and what I have accomplished since college. My five years in college is when I had all my mistakes in life, but very valuable life experiences. Just to give you an Idea, I had 6 pages of the Arrest/ Citation questionnaire. Two and a half of which were all parking tickets from a year and a half time frame. One of the panel members began laughing about how many parking tickets I had??.I havent been stopped in six years now.(knock on wood) So I?m just extremely nervous that I?m going to receive a lower score for all my screw ups.
I?m just curious to know if it?s common for a QAP to last 20 minuets. Any feedback is good feedback.
It is an HONOR to have made it this far and wish everyone the best of luck on their journey.

My QAP was done in about 20-25 minutes. I don't know how well I did though. I only had one entry on my citation questionaire from 1993. Really knocks on wood!

I have had 4 tickets, 2 of which were fix it tickets. My interview lasted almost 30 minuntes. Also, tomorrow (tuesday 10/24/06) will be exactly 3 weeks from the date of my QAP and I still have not received my results, so don't expect results any time soon.

Well, I just hope past mistakes plays no role in their decision, cuz if so, It pretty much looks like Im toast. Thats why Im so worried because I feel that I didnt get an opportunity to tell them who I am today and everything that I have accomplished since my crazy college days. I'll just wait and see............It looks like 20-30 minutes for a QAP is common...
What division did you all test in?

Southern Division! Aprox. 35,40!

I am testing in the Central Division.

I don't think they judge you solely on your mistakes in the QAP. I think that is more of the BI's job. I think they want to see more of how you handle yourself in a stressful situation, and how you justify your past. Whether you are always blaming others or your mature even to accept responsibility for your actions.

I have heard that a few times, but I sure hope its correct in my case. I felt I handled myself very well in the meeting. Took full responsability for my actions.
Good luck on your results. Keep us posted.

I had 6 pages of the Arrest/ Citation questionnaire. Two and a half of which were all parking tickets from a year and a half time frame.

Goldendog

Doesn't that form specify to exclude parking citations?

And how do you go about getting a fly-a-long? That sounds like fun.

On the PHS page 18 it states to list all traffic citations (except parking tickets) received in the past seven years. But on the CHP 446F, it states to list all citations regardless of when they occurred. It doesnt say anything about parking tickets. That is the form where I listed all the parking tickets.
The fly-along was awesome. I recently played in a charity golf tournament, and after the tourney, there was a silent auction. One of the gifts that they were auctioning off charity was a 4 hour fly-a-long with the LA Sheriffs Department. I saw that and couldn?t pass it up. So I bid on it and won. Ride-a-long was with CHP. Both very fun and informational.

Hey Goldendog;

Welcome to the site.

Did the officials interviewing you give you any feedback during your QAP? When I had my QAP I was told I did extremely well - and would make a fine officer. I was however DQ'd during the initial 45 seconds but did receive a practice QAP interview where I received this information. Nonetheless my interview lasted between 20-30 minutes. You could've attempted to explain your past, present, and future accomplishments etc. during your closing statement. Regardless I am sure you did fine, if not don't let it get you down. Dust off and try again, you will find once you've read several posts under the hiring process that several people here have been trying for months if not years to start their title of "cadet" at the academy.

Keep us posted when you receive your QAP results.

Some Divisions will tell applicants not to list parking citations because parkers are issued to the vehicle, not a person. If you don't receive those instructions, better safe than sorry.

Thanks for the positive reinforcement, and I will keep you posted on my results...Its been one week today. The time seems to be creeping by very slow with this anticipation....

Goldendog and others,

As I have said on here before it can take years to get this position. It's not a job it is a career and a calling as is LE in general.

In my own personal case I tested four times over a period of around seven years before I was able to convince them to take me. Lets just say I was a less than desireable candidate for LE when I was a late teen and early twenties type and leave it at that for the purposes of this post, OK?

I am living proof that the process can be overcome. I finally got hired in 1974 and never looked back. Now it seems to me that the past 35 to 40 years (since I began the testing process) have gone by in the blink of an eye, which is why I am posting this. I thought your post about time seeming to be creeping by slowly was kind of cute too. Just wait a few years if its going too slowly for you.

You will do fine I am betting, and I just want to encourage all of you to keep on banging back if you really want this career. Don't let anyone tell you no. I recall telling one QAP that I would be returning again and again until I was accepted and that in my opinion they were missing the boat on a very good potential officer. This was as they were giving me the bad news just like they did to observer.

And while you are at it, if the CHP won't budge and you really are a good qualified candidate, test elsewhere too. They are competing for good quality folks in LE just now.

Once more, Best of luck to all members of this site.

Thanks retchp.
I've never been a quitter and don?t plan on becoming one now. However, I don?t anticipate the hiring process to be easy. I do understand that. Hopefully in 30 years I can look back and say exactly what you just said about my career with the CHP.

I'm just very excited to get the process underway. My college days, almost 6 years ago, were crazy ones. I had a little too much fun. I was a great student, played sports all four years, but I think I chased a little too much tail and always seemed to be in the wrong place at the wrong time...tickets.. etc?. I feel I expressed that to the QAP panel. I?m just hoping I made myself clear enough to them?.Again, only time will tell.

I?ve waited 6 years since my last ?screw up? to apply, and to finally follow my life long dream. If I don?t make it with the CHP, I don?t plan on applying elsewhere; I just have no desire too. My grandfather always told me, "If you want to become a police officer join the CHP, because they only hire the best". I believe that to this day....Why sell myself short........I?ll keep posted?..

Thanks.

Asking if they gave you any feedback after your QAP reminded me of something one of the panel members said after my QAP. She said at the end of my interview that some officers have the same problem that I will have when I am officer. That problem is that one of my family members is into illegal drugs and alcohol, and things of that nature. She told me it is very difficult to be in that situation as an officer but when I am in the academy they will teach me how to deal with that.

The fact that when she was talking to me and telling me WHEN I am in the academy, and when I am an officer they will teach me how to deal with that situation really made me feel good. She didn't say IF you make it. I don't look into it too much and I certainly don't take that to mean that that I have already passed and I am guaranteed to get in. She could have said if you get into the academy and if you become and officer, but she chose when.

Sorry, that was just a memory that jumped into my head after reading this thread.

Correct I was Dq'd during the first 45 seconds, I walked in, I sat down, I stated my name, and I was Dq'd. Reason for the Dq we will not discuss as it is personal information; I was however granted a practice interview. They said it would allow me to get a feel for it, and it was my option weather or not to follow through with it. Being that I have waited my entire life to be an officer, I took the chance at the practice round. At the end of my interview, both officers in the room stated not to let the Dq get me down, don?t stop trying, and to reapply. I felt good and bad when one of the officers told me I'd make a great officer, however they have set guidelines for a reason. It was like a light at the end of the tunnel suddenly went dark, but it also reassured me that I do have what it takes and that light was visible again. Regardless it's just time, and in time I will attain my lifelong goal. As Retchp stated, I too told them I would be back, and I'll continue coming back until they setup a restraining order to keep me out.

As far as reapplying, I will be waiting a little bit - I am currently in the process of getting married, building a home, and starting a family.

Like I said before, almost half of the people on this site have been trying, and they've been trying for a long time. Don't let it get you down, in time it will happen. Good luck!

Observer, I like your style.

If I had applied straight out of college, and walked into the QAP meeting, I would have been DQ'd immediately. Everyone one has skeletons in their closet. Those who say they don?t aren?t real. But out of college, at 23, I wasn?t ready for responsibilities yet. I was still coming off that college buzz, if you know what I mean. Its amazing what life experiences brings you with age. I?m 29 now.

Since college I have accomplished what you are currently working on doing. Marriage?the whole thing??You have goals and a drive, and you shouldn?t let anything stop you from achieving them. Give it time and eventually you will get what you want. I have amazed myself from what I?ve accomplished since my crazy college days. Determination is KEY! In two weeks I will find out if I will be continuing on.

Again, I will keep you posted with my results. .
?Successful people don?t flinch??.?

The CHP wants the BEST and to find the best, it will take time and effort from both parties. My dream is to become a CHP officer and each time I failed, it has made me a better applicant.
