What books should I get to study?I passed high school with a 3.0 so I know I am pretty capable, but a lot of people got me kind of intimidated.I talked to a CHP officer today and he told me spelling and vocabulary are the 2 big items.Where is the test at anyways?I applied for the golden gate division.

There is a book out that I bought for my written test and it is pretty commonly suggested for the CHP written, I'm pretty sure it is specifically written for the CHP written test. It is an awesome preparation tool for that test. Do a search, the link to the book is on this forum somewhere.

The others answered your questions about the study guide. The location of the written test will be sent to you well in advance of the test itself. It can vary from test to test, so it would be hard for anybody to tell you exactly where it will be.

Spelling, vocabulary and writing ability are highly important not only for the written test, but also for the academy and every step of your career as a CHP officer after that. It's a huge part of the job, and I'd say more people get washed out of the academy due to their inability to write than anything else.

Private Cowboy, huh?:
"How tall are you private?"
"Sir, five foot nine, sir!"
"Five foot nine! I didn't know they stacked s**t that high! Are you trying to squeeze an inch in on me somewhere? HUH?!?"
"Sir, no sir"
"Bulls**t! It looks to me like the best part of you ran down the crack of your mama's a** and ended up as a brown stain on the mattress!
I think you've been CHEATED!"

Learning Express offers a book called "State Police Exam, California" and you can get it from Amazon. It's touted as "The only customized guide to becoming a State Traffic Officer in California". While I'm waiting for my written test results to come back, I did find the book helpful. If you can get it early enough, you should take all of the sample tests and see how you do. There are five key areas to study for, and this book along with the Applicant Study Guide from the CHP can help.

Like Mac said you really need to know how to write, and write well. The study guides may help you pass the test, but they will not help you pass the Academy. What you don't see are the detailed reports, statements and many other forms that must be filled out for a given incident. Those must be accurate, easy to understand, and detailed. At the Academy, you are taking College level classes on top of learning all of the physical, mental, weapon, and driving tactics to become a quality Officer. You don't want to learn how to write when you are trying to study for an academic test or any of the other key areas of education at the Academy. If you feel like you are rusty with writing, take a college class for English composition now and get it out of the way. Many people take the test and see how they do. If you do well, great. If not, you know what you have to improve on.

I already purchased a report writing template and am practicing my penmanship. I plan on using it when I complete my final draft of my PHS. I have begun researching the history of the CHP and understanding what the department is all about. Just remember, everything at the Academy and possibly through break-in is hand written. So if you have chicken scratch (like I do from years of typing), get to practicing in all CAPS whether you make it or not. It's just one more thing you are doing to ready yourself to possibly join a world class department. I know that's a little off topic, but it's just some friendly advice that goes hand in hand with writing.
