Hello:
I just watched "CHiPs '99" for the very first time and I was just wondering, what CHP office did they film it from? Also, Arthur Grossman got promoted to "detective." Is there really a rank of "detective" in the CHP?
Thank you.

haha Im looking at that movie right now. Detective. Yes I have hered that there is a Detective rank in CHP but no maytter what you are still a Traffic Officer. I have seen these socalled Detectives on the freeeway in unmarked cars in suites but that also could have been a CAPT?But IDK whata CAPT. would be doing looking at a semi with a bunch of uniformed officers.
There are officers assigned to investigative positions within the department, but they are not called or deemed "detectives." We do have unmarked cars of all different sorts and officers who look like the creeps we arrest doing undercover work. There are not very many and the jobs are sought after heavily and given to highly motivated, organized and intelligent people.

There is an actual detective position within the CHP. It is at the office of capitol protection and there are very few of them. There are 40,000 state workers in downtown Sacramento and the CHP has primary law enforcement jurisdiction over them. We are no longer called traffic officers. We are simply Officers as stated on our badges (the salty officers still have badges with the 'traffic' still on them).
There are many investigative services officers who are the undercover narcs, gang officers (in some areas), and auto theft. Your 'regular' office might have a misdemeanor and/or felony follow up officer(s). But many offices don't even have that. As the primary officer you handle the case from start to finish.
You probably saw a captain or higher on the right shoulder if I had to guess.

Actually, according to the Vehicle Code, we're still Traffic Officers. As it says on MY badge
As for the detective rank: we used to have them as official positions many years ago but not anymore. It's a totally unofficial designation with no benefits. The last time I saw it used was in an MIS regarding state credit card theft in Southern Division. All of the officers in that SIU were referred to as detectives in the MIS. This was over four years ago and I've never seen it used since. It does not, however exist in the MOU, PTM, or ATM, nor does it appear on a badge bottom rocker (if you've seen one ka4993, it isn't covered by any manual I'm aware of).

Although the original was filmed at the (old) Central LA office, "CHiPs 99" was filmed at the East LA office. When they filmed the show in '98, the new Central LA office was still on the drawing board, or they would have more than likely filmed it at the original location. However, to answer your question it was filmed at the newest LA Area officer at that time... ELA!

Yes, beautiful ELA. My last day working in ELA I took the person deciding where the new office was going to be built to each of the possible building sites and gave them my thoughts on the pros and cons of building it at that location. This is one of the few times that somebody from Sacto listened to me.
When the department absorbed the State Police, we gained several "Detectives" in Southern Division. A lot of the CHP investigators in ISU started using the title, but there was never any perks to go with it. After the former State Police Detectives either retired or were sent to the field to work the road, the title was no longer used.

What do you mean by "new Central LA" office? Was it being remodeled at that time??
Also, I thought CHiPs '99 was very cheesy. Did you like it?

What episode of CHIPs wasn't cheesy Noob? I mean the ones with the Kadet riding around as a CHP motor had some credibility to them.....or maybe the episode where Ponch and John hanglided onto a state beach and saved the day?
Just checking in case I missed one since I was geeky enough to watch most of them and don't remember one that wasn't.

The Central LA office used for the original CHiPs is no longer standing. There was a brand new office built three or four years ago at the same general location, and the old office was demolished. I have never set foot in the new CLA office, but I hear it is quite an improvement over the old one, where I worked.
All CHiPs episodes were cheesy... It is cool though to see the Department put on the big scene, even if no episode resembles the real job...

Sorry...nothing beats the episode where Bonnie rear ended the phantom tractor trailer while talking on the radio to a stuttering kid in a wheel chair with the scanner. Ahhh..,,,the days of clean TV

Was that the one where she passed out? I grew up watching CHiPs reruns, and it made me admire CHP, now i see that it wasnt that accurate, but it got me liking it from the start.

Hehe, I caught it in both satellite images. One while it's in the rebuilding process and the other one completed.

If you don't mind me asking, where did the central LA Chippies go while it was being rebuilt?

CLA continued to work out of the old office while the new one was being built.
