View Full Version : BI credit history
Hi I think this forum is an excellent resource for people who are in the hiring process, I am currently backrounds I am about to have my initial interview. My question is that I am 24 and when I was in college like so many others I made really poor financial decisions. I defaulted on several credit cards and they went into collection. Right now I managed to enroll in a credit counseling program that will pay them off so I am making payments now. But this is the only stain on my backround, I have no traffic violations, a clean criminal, no prior drug use and a solid employment history. So I would like to know how this will affect me in backrounds. It is my understanding that bad credit alone is not a disqualifier, is this true? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I am 36. I had an auto repo when I was 18 and that didn't hurt me in the hiring process.
Just like anything in your past, ayce, you'll have to explain your decisions. Whether you are disqualified or not depends on the recency and severity of your delinquent accounts. Your actions since that time also matter; the fact that you've enrolled in a credit consolidation program and managed not to declare bankruptcy is a good sign. Applicants often get caught-up in worrying about a single issue disqualifying them, whereas we are evaluating you in your entirety. You will certainly have the opportunity to provide an explanation to your background investigator regarding how you got into the predicament you're in today. The only advice I can give is to be honest and take responsibility ( it sounds you already have) for your past actions.
