Hello from Washington state. I am just coming out of college with a bachelor's and a conviction for DUI. I know how big a mistake it was, but i wouldnt change it because it has helped me mature from a crazy college kid. Anyhow, I like the CHP for many reasons and I would like to apply. The information I recieved is 3 years must pass before I can apply wtih a DUI.

I am hoping to move down there and soak in the california lifestyle before applying (I still have a year and a half to go). Can anyone confirm this "3 year waiting period" so I can plan accordingly for a rewarding future career? Thank you.

I wrote about prior DUI convictions at the older forum. Don't worry about it; just show how much you've learned at your QAP. And try to get involved with talking about it to youths through MADD or something similar. You need to turn it into a positive. There have been plenty of cadets with priors for DUI. And sadly, we have a slew of chiefs who've been arrested for DUI. Including a recent arrest of the Training Division chief (the chief who's in charge of the Academy). It's a very sad statement but you need to actively turn it into a positive by talking to highschoolers, etc. Then in your QAP you'll have something to brag about instead of something to defend; know what I mean?

Definitely check out the other thread. I'm not going to discuss any automatic disqualification time frames, but even once that time has passed, such arrest may affect your QAP score. If this is what you want to do, keep your spirits up. It may take more time than you'd like, but the job it worth it in the end.
