Good guess zen_out. I was told tonight that there was one no-show and 4 snuck out in the middle of the night last night, so the class is now down to 175 so far.

What a bunch of Jackasses.....err....sorry about that...I suffer from online-turrets syndrome. What I meant to say was....I hope everything works out for them. Best of luck with their future endeavors.

The sad part is, those that quit or FTA'd took a spot someone else wanted.

4 snuck out - any truth to this statement?
It's only been a few days...oh well. If they can't cut it now they'll never cut it. Definate waste of their time, and more importantly the CHP. I'd be embarrassed if I high tailed it over the barbed wire fence, and I also think my wife would end up kicking my ass. At least they will have 48 hours worth of stories for their grandchildren...
LAME.

Amen to that.

This is what my fiance told me last night. I guess the cadets got an earful about it the next day from the staff -- telling them not to be cowards and when (not if) they quit, they need to tell the staff so they can process the paperwork, etc...
Also, that would be 24 hours of stories, not 48 - since they quit the same night they came there. LOL

On those 4 that snuck out, I wonder if they left mannequins on their beds and made rafts out of rain coats for their great escape?

How do you sneak out of the academy? Oh well, is this gossip or truth, I can believe people walking out the front door but sneaking out...WHAT?!!

Well perhaps they just walked out in the middle of the night without telling the staff that they quit and the staff considers that sneaking out? Speculation, of course. I seriously doubt that they peeked around corners and slithered under the fence, etc. You guys are reading way too much into this. LOL. Please chill.
All I was told by my fiance (who is there right now in the Sept 18th class) is that they got an earful on Tuesday about the 4 that sneaked out in the middle of the night like I stated above.
Again, this is just 2nd hand info relayed to me from a cadet who is there. Had I known that the words "sneaking out" were going to cause so many posts, I probably wouldn't have posted as I really don't want any attention brought to the cadets that are there now.

It's hard to tell fact from fiction at this point. My best friend is there right now and hopefully she'll be home this weekend. I can't wait to hear about her first week at the Academy. So far I have not heard from her which at this point is a GOOD thing. Thankfully we both live in Sacramento, so she can take advantage of her earned liberty time with her family and friends with nothing more than a 15 minute drive from the Academy grounds. As soon as I see her, the encouragement begins.
I would be highly dissapointed in myself if I made it that far, only to try and sneak out on the first night. If I'm lucky enough to make it there I'll be giving up a much better paying job, a great deal of time and energy studying and working through the process, and if I quit a life long dream of mine. I have already burned it into my brain that if I make it there, they will have to drag me out of there because I will not quit. I might cry, want to quit, feel like dirt but you have to deal with it. I think most things there are done for a reason, whether it seems right at the time or not. You just have to face each day as you go, stay focused on the goal of graduating and becoming the best Officer that you can. That is my goal and I hope I can live up to it.
I wish all of those who are hanging in there the best. I would love to be in any one of those peoples shoes right now. Some people just don't get it and others just have a family who does not support them. Even with my best friend, only a hand full of her family and friends really support her decision to join the CHP. Without support and encouragement, it would be easy to lose sight of your goals.

It can be really surprising why people choose to quit. In my reserve academy at San Bernardino, one guy quit just two weeks before graduation. We had already taken most of the tests including the KDs and firearms. In addition, we already were gas chambered and pepper sprayed. We practically begged him to stay, but he told us that he was just tired of everything.
Another was about to quit because she could buy some stuff, but the rest of the students weren't going to have any of that. We pooled our money and helped her buy it.
I'm sure there are similar stories at the CHP academy of people quitting in the middle or even when it is almost over. Remember that some people are doing the academy just to impress their family or friends. Really, you should go to an academy for yourself and only for yourself... damn what other people think.

How were you able to talk to your fiance if they don't allow calls during the first week?

I don't know how he was able to call me. I honestly don't care how he was able to call me. I was just glad to hear from him and glad to know he was hanging in there. But you know what? I'm done defending myself here. One thing I am not, is a liar. Now with all this questioning of my post, the cadets will probably get called out for making phone calls and everything else. You have made me very sorry to have posted and given you any information at all. I won't be posting anymore updates. Get your information elsewhere from now on.

Your right - they probably will... and second you spilled the milk... You have to judge what should and shouldn't be said. Can't go back now.
By the way --- thanks for the update.

I was wondering the same thing regarding how she heard from her fiance. It's not your fault dlg2k6 - it's hard to know the rules on the outside of the Academy. However it's also not good if your fiance is making calls when/if they were instructed not to. Based on the fact I have not heard from my very best friend who is there (we talk EVERYDAY), I would say they were instructed not to make any calls this week. The Academy is sure to be a safe place, so worrying about them really isn't required. Yes they are probably going through a very rough time, but they are safe. The staff does not beat up on them outside of using verbal words and demanding certain physical activities. In todays world, it's easy to just pick up the phone and make a call. From the car, from the walking trail, etc. The last thing I would do while at the Academy is risk drawing any attention to myself on purpose. If I make it there I know I will screw up, probably a bunch of times. Those times can't be prevented, but things like listening to basic instructions and following the rules should be followed. Attention to detail is one of the reasons people make it to the Academy, and instructions should be followed to the letter. If I were caught doing something wrong on the second day, they will probably remember that for a while.
From what I've learned from other Officers, the Academy is quite an interesting place. Your time there is intense, but it's well worth it in the end. Remember to encourage your family or freinds attending the Academy that it's not the job/life they signed on for, it's just the bridge they need to build and cross before getting to the other side (patrol). You need to learn how to walk before you can run, and that is what the Academy is there for. I think many of the Cadets who do leave think that is what their new career is all about. The training is a part of it, but you don't show up at your first assignment and do a 4 mile run. You jump into a car with your FTO and do your best to utilize the training on the road, trying to do your new job to the best of your abilities. Your training and learning does not stop the day you leave the Academy. If I listened correctly to other Officers, your training has only just begun. I love to learn and if I had a job where I could learn something new everyday, I'd be totally happy. I wish all of the Cadets at CTC III-06 the best of luck. I hope the majority of them hang in there. I look forward to meeting some of them on March 27th at the graduation ceremony.

Nice post. However, I didn't mean to give the impression that I am worried about him. I know he is safe and sound and I KNOW he will make it through. I have all the confidence in him in the world, and I will continue to encourage him all the way through. I also would like to say that I know him well enough to know that he wouldn't have made that phone call if he was told they were not to make any phone calls. I know he wouldn't have went out of his way to break any rules. He is not that kind of person. This was not a desperation phone call LOL. But thanks for the words of encouragement. I appreciate it.

Okay, just a quick whistle blow. Watch the language, name calling, and judgements of cadets who resign early. If you haven't been there yet you couldn't possibly understand. As for the inappropriate epithet and language, this is a professional forum administrated and moderated by officers and sergeants. We will not allow it to turn into a place for trash talking.
Enough said and thread locked.

so in other words, you fiance cannot follow simple instructions and called you despite being told not too? man, he's been there 48 hours and he's already a salty cadet!
