Hey. I'm hopefully going to the academy relatively soon, and I'd like to know if this is a good idea. Right now I'm in the military, I am married and I have a 2 year old daughter, and I have one more on the way. By the time I go to the academy, the other one will be born. Would it be a good idea to rent an apartment close to the academy, like a month-to-month lease until I graduate and get my orders to my first place of duty? Sorry, new to this forum, but I've heard good things about the amount of support on here!

I believe the best advice is to have your wife and kids stay in an area where they will have plenty of support. Maybe with or near relatives. With you being in the military, your wife likely already is very self sufficient but the less you have to worry about the family, the more you can focus on your studies. What phase of testing are you in that you plan on attending the Academy relatively soon?

You may have taken your PAT this past Saturday and have your QAP on Tuesday, but definitely no PAT on Tuesday. Hopefully you consider next March (maybe) or June (more likely) as relatively soon.

Before the psych testing EAT...trust me there is nothing like 500 questions at 0800. For the QAP, be very very honest, everyone's QAP is different..mine was almost 2 hours, my friends was 30. So..go figure...Good Luck hope this helps.;)

You had a two hour QAP?!? My QAP lasted all of 10 minutes, and that was long enough to have me sweatin' up a storm.

I was just honest, my intial interview was 4 hours. More to explain...when I came out of my QAP there was a line for my panel..I was on panel 2. I felt bad for the guys waiting...hahaha but it was worth it. I've just done alot, and I'm very young.

You must have had a lot to explain. If you don't mind me asking, how old are you? Initial interview ... as in your BI initial?

i'm with snowdog. when my husband entered the academy, our girls were eleven months old and two years old. it was REALLY hard on the two year old, having daddy gone so much, and it helped give her some extra stability and distraction to be near other relatives. can it be done other ways? absolutely! hopefully your wife understands that she married a warrior type and has the typical successful military spouse mindset that will help you sail through. but if i could make it easier on my kids, i would. it also makes it easier on mom if grandparents are around to give a much needed and deserved break when dad isn't able to pick up some of the slack, you know? my husband also felt a bit less stress, knowing we had many loved ones around us to care for us in ways he was unable to.

make sure you look into military storage for your stuff, when you get out! they stored our stuff for a year, free of charge, so we had one shipment of what we HAD to have for six months, then stored the rest of our 2400 square feet of junk, waiting for a duty station!
