I passed the written exam when I took it for the border division on Aug 27, 2005.

However, I was not able to keep going with the hiring process because I got deployed to Iraq in September.

My question is, after I return from Iraq in March/April, how long is my score good for. Is it a year??

If I decide to pick up where I left off (QAP Interview / PAT ) in September, will I have to retake the test since it's been past a year??

thank you for all your time

I have heard the written is good for 10 years and/or your lifetime.

I took the written the first time back in 2000 and the last two times I sent in the App, it would always say that the written was waived and would move into the PAT.

Good luck in the process and thank you for your service.

Hello to all,

I had another questiong regarding the hiring process....

If I go to a the QAP interview and score less than the 95 needed to move on with the process. How soon may I re-apply for the position again?? 6 months? 12 months?

My situation is that I do not know if I should attend the QAP as soon as I return from Iraq in Spring 2006 or just wait until I get out of the Marines (Fall 2006) when I will be eligible to claim the extra 10 Veterans Points for the QAP. If I wait until I get out of the Marines, the Vet Points will really improve my chances of getting a 95 or above.

I am afraid that I will get something below a 95 and not be able to continue with the hiring process for over a year, when I could have just waited to get out of the service and have a better chance of continuing the hiring process.

I spoke to the recruiter in the Border Division and he mentioned that I cannot claim the veterans points until I get my DD 214 (Discharge Papers).

Thank you for your replies and your time.

Carlos

Whats up Carlos, I am in the Navy and will be getting out this March so I was also concerned like you about the QAP scoring and vet preference points. In my case though, I went to my QAP and scored a 90 without my vet points and still received a committment to hire letter so it all just depends I think on how you present yourself during your interview. I personally wouldn't recommend waiting until you get out of the military just because you wouldn't be able to start your background until your results come back and the whole process can take awhile. Just some info for you from someone that was and is still there. Ray

Last year, I took the QAP and scored a 90. No vet points for me, so that was it. Re-applied and this year I got a 95. In talking with my BI, he told me that this round, they changed the scoring, again, back down to 90. As well, they are trying to up the size of the next couple classes up to the 120 range, instead of the 90 range. Who knows what will happen next year!!

good luck to both of you!

Thanks for the added reasoning redhead, my good fortune I guess with the new scoring and i'll take what I can get. By the way red, how long did it take for your BI to finally give you an initial call? Thanks

You can reapply as soon as the system clears your application. So, basically, as soon as your QAP score is recorded. (When we all tested on the same dates, it was easy to say you could just put in your application for the next cycle. Now, with the Divisions staggered, you have to make sure your "old" application clears before submitting your "new" application.) There is no limit, per se, on how often one can apply.

Sorry, have been out of town. My BI took two weeks to contact me from turning in the PHQ and then it was another week before the Inital. Every divison is going to be different though, as shown here (http://www.chpforums.com/Default.aspx?g=posts&t=60)

Good Luck!!!

My question is, after I return from Iraq in March/April, how long is my score good for. Is it a year??

sdapplicant, I originally took the written test in 1996. When I attended a recruitment orientation in July of 2005, the recruiter told me to call the Cadet Hiring Unit in Sacramento. They said that once the written is passed, it is good for life. Well, at least life up to age 36. I received the same letter that redhead mentioned above that had the written waived.

If you fail any part of the testing process, you can reapply (assuming you meet minimum qualifications). You would start at the PAT each time.

As soon as you are back home and are able, schedule a ride along or a couple for that matter. You are eligible for that since you have passed the written. I had to bring the letter mentioned above to the CHP office to show the officer that scheduled me that I was in the testing process. That may not be required everywhere. Ride alongs are a blast and are an awesome way to get to know the job which will help in the QAP.

Hopefully this info helps. Thanks for serving our country and good luck to you.
