Since I saw the question in another thread, here are some pics of the BMW R1200RT-P and a crude rendering of what one would look like in CHP livery.

Why did the CHP go with Harleys instead of staying with BMW motors?

I think I should rephrase. If the BMW 1150RT is doing good then how come the CHP isn't upgrading to the 1200RT? Didn't Harley Davidson win the CHP contract?

Harley Davidson did win the contract. If only the bike could pass the testing phase. I'm still hoping for the 1200RTP. That is one sweet bike!

They are nice. I had the opportunity to ride a R1200RT. More power, smoother engine. The gearing seemed much better, 5th and 6th are spaced a lot closer together so didn't feel over revved or lugged. The adjustable suspension was also nice. You could go from very soft ride with tons of compliance to something extremely stiff. Everything else was typical BMW RT (brakes, handling, etc). My only complaint was at idle at a stop light there seemed to be more vibration in the fairing & mirrors with everything jiggling around. But not a deal breaker, probably because the engine was green and still being broke in (less than 500 miles).

In my dept in the UK we're switching from Honda STX1300's to the BMW1200. The STX 1300's have some reported serious handling problems above 100mph.
Had a ride on the BMW and found it to be a wonderful bike. Highly recommend it.
If I get a chance I'll post a pic of me on it in UK livery

Very nice! So you guys aren't allowed to carry guns, right?
Everyone should take note of all the protective gear these guys wear......and now compare it to what WE wear. These guys have it right.

Two points to answer there I guess ....
Only a few officers are armed over here. My dept is about 3600 officers. We have about 30 armed officers on duty in special armed response units at any one time. Their guns are kept in locked boxes in the cars and are only accessible on special orders from senior officer in response to specific threats. Don't forget we don't have as many firearms in the UK (although we are in the frontline in the war on terror as much as yourselves ... don't forget our subway bombings). Lots of people in the UK carry knives now ... I face them with CS spray and an ASP.
On motors we wear full race leathers (made to measure), and a full face helmet. As you can see, the bike and rider are made much more visible than the CHP. It's not much fun in the summer though !
Having spent last summer at DRE School at the Academy, you would'nt want to spend a summer in Cal in the kit we wear, but even in the South UK I was wearing this when the temp hit the 90's this summer!
I lost a lot of weight though!!!!!!!!
Still have trouble understanding how you guys survive on motors wearing what you do though!

Down here in So. Cal the Hawthorne PD motors wear full face helmets.

Are they regular full face or are they like the Shoei Modular that flips up? I always wished we would go to the modular flip ups...... :biggrin:shock:ubt:

Not sure of the brand but the whole front portion slides up above the head leaving your whole face exposed.

I couldn't figure out how to paste a picture in here, but link below has a great picture of a flip up helmet

Nice motor!
Is any of the coloring relfective? Looks to have very good visibility to motorists! Good and bad probably?
I notice the CHP motors do more with LED lighting on the fronts, sides and rears.

The yellow and blue (its' known as "Battenburg Livery" in the UK after a kind of cake believe it or not!!) is reflective.
While I was in California I did notice that the CHP bikes have a lot more lighting fitted than over here.
With regards to helmets, we get to have a limited choice. I currently use a full face Arai (pictured), but many are now starting to use the Schuberth flip up from the link in the previous post. Most officers love it for a number of reasons, including the fighter pilot style sunshield.
Our leathers are made to measure. They're a two piece suit which zips together. They cost about ?1000 each set!
Gets a bit "warm" in the summer to say the least!

I agree, Tom. I'm not a motor and have never been one, but it amazes me that our motor uniforms go against practically every safety rule taught in MSF classes. Open-face helmets, short sleeves, paper-thin britches...whatever happened to "Dress for the slide, not for the ride"?

That reflective vest is a pretty good idea. Why doesn't the CHP issue reflective vests to officers who work the night beat? I've driven by Caltrains workers who had reflective vests on and it greatly helps the visibility for oncoming motorists...

For the past 3 mornings I have seen a white Dodge dually truck, hauling Aprox. 4 to 6 bikes in a flatbed trailer. I typically pass him while driving 99 South bound from Yuba City into Sac. The bikes are all BMW - and look to have the CHP insignia on them. They also looked brand spanking new.

On one of the ride-a-longs with the Chico office I asked the officer about them. There's a BMW shop @ East Ave./Mangrove Ave. here in Chico. Apparently the guy who runs the shop is the best BMW mechanic in the Valley Div. area. That's the story as I know it. Maybe they go from motor pool to his shop for service, etc.

I see the one out of the Truckee office almost daily.....it'd be nice to roll around in a Tahoe all day, but then again, I doubt they are the best for pursuits or going really fast.....

Following on from the successful trial of the Lexus RX 400h by Hampshire Police in August last year, Wiltshire Constabulary will be the first police force in the country to incorporate the recently launched high performance Lexus GS 450h to their fleet.

We couldn't go to Lexus patrol cars in California - we'd all have to change our names to "Biff" and "Skippy", wear ascots, Izod uniform shirts and "topsiders" instead of boots, and sip latte instead of drinking coffee!

I was at the Roseville auto mall the other day.....I think the new Dodge Chargers would be pretty cool. Get the 5.6 Liter V8 HEMI! I think I scared the sales guy during the test drive, and I'm sure the Roseville Cops would have given me a stern look or two. Plus, it's a Charger......that's Coffee at it's Blackest! No sugar or cream either. LOL.

BUT with the topsiders you all could reenact "Miami Vice". THAT could be cool.

It's not that I think the new Charger is a horrible car or anything, it's just that they should have called it a Polara, Monaco, Coronet, or something like that if they were wanting to use a famous name from the past, and saved the Charger name for a sporty 2 door of some sort.

Like the Challenger in 2008? Yeah, something like that.
I think the new Charger should've been named the Coronet if they really wanted to use a legendary name from their past on a new sedan. After all, the old Coronets were midsize, you could get them as a 4 door sedan, you could get them with anything from mild slant 6s to the 4 barrel 383, and they were offered as a police package.
But that's me. ;)
