Spoke to my BI yesterday - he said there's no truth to this statement. He's yet to see an academy where they stopped inviting a month prior...

Absoutely true, that we have not done this in the recent past. Invites to the last class were held for a week or so, then released again at the last minute.
As I've said before, the plan is to have halted all invitaitons as of yesterday. The plan is also to have 180 cadets in the class. If the class has been filled, no more invitations will go out. If it has not, then I would not be surprised if we keep making offers. Remember, nothing in the Highway Patrol is guaranteed until it actually happens.
Some background for those new to the process: Prior to the hiring freeze, we maintained "the shelf," which was a list of those applicants who were cleared the entire application process and waiting for an Academy date. The shelf was extensive at times and most of us waited through at least one class (three months) before getting an invitation -- others waited longer. Obviously with the shelf, invitations can go out well in advance because we have plenty of time to plan.
Post-freeze the shelf was exhausted to fill the first class; the class was planned at the last minute and there was not time to get an application cycle going. Since then, the economy has been better -- law enforcement is less appealing. Recruitment has been a struggle for agencies nationwide. As a result, no shelf has been established. We've been working on getting applicants through the process and making an invitation immediately to the next class.
If you go back a couple months when people were complaining about backgrounds taking too long, I explained it didn't really matter in the big picture. If the application process were expedited and a flood of applicants came through, the delay would simply be moved to waiting on the shelf rather than in backgrounds.
Something like that is happening now. While we don't exactly have a flood of applicants coming through (economy still good, lack of military applicants due to service, entitlement generation, etc), the application process has been expedited. My personal feeling is we're pretty close to establishing a meager shelf, meaning 15-30-60-90-days prior to the class start date, it has been filled. All future applicants cleared will be invited to the next class.
Again, I have been on vacation and do not have any current numbers -- maybe snowdog does?

Makes perfect sense - thanks for taking the time to explain.

August 18 was the cutoff date. But keep in mind that psych results have continued to come in to CHU right up to the last minute. With that in mind, if 180 wasn't reached, invitations may have continued to go out and some may not be recieved by applicants until the middle of this week. I can't say what the class numbers look like but CHU would rather not start getting calls this week from applicants wanting to learn their status. If invitations continue to go out, I wouldn't expect they would continue for very long past the 18th.
I can't say I support a member of the Department, for example a background investigator, putting out information that would cause confusion. Don't we see enough of that here? I think the best idea is reinforce what the Department has put out and if an applicant gets an invitation beyond the cutoff date, let them make their decision after considering if this is best for them.

My fiance received his invitation to attend the Sept 18th academy today. It was mailed yesterday (Aug 21) via 10:30am overnight delivery. We are very excited! However, there are a couple questions he asked me to ask on this forum.
1) Are laptops useful at the academy, and if not - are they even allowed?
2) We will be up in the Sacramento area on Sept 1st. Is he allowed to go into the Academy PX at that time to buy his boots or any other supplies he may need prior to entering the academy?
Thank you for any information you can give us.

Im not sue about the Laptop, I dont have my SOP with me right now. But you can go to the PX and buy your boots, or you can call them and order them over the phone. I just got mine today in the mail from the PX. If you do go, take your husbands invitation letter as the PX is no longer open to the public, but on CHP employees. I was told this by a PX employee when I was in Sacramento 3 weeks ago. Call the PX ahead of time and make sure they have the boots in your fiance's size, so they can order them for you if nevesary. The number for the PX is: (916) 376-3330.
No to laptops, not allowed or needed at the academy. Helpful when you graduate and are on break in.....
Boots, if you can't get them at the academy. All uniform (Ace, Butler's, etc.) stores carry boots!
Good Luck!

Thanks for the info! Also, as far as his SOP - the copy that he got from his BI on his final visit to see him had every other page missing. Is it important that he get a full copy before he goes to the academy? Should he request a new copy from his BI?

You should not worry about it. I was told that they will give you the complete package when you get to academy. Good luck
Wait until you get there to get a SOP. It changes from class to class.

I would recommend getting a copy. It does change from class to class, but everyone else will be going in with the full SOP memorized (or at least they should be). If I were him, I'd give his BI a friendly call and see if another copy is available.
