So I bought a "new to me" Ford Expedition and I'm interested in covering the tow hitch with something. I seem to recall hearing somewhere that having the tow hitch ball just there is illegal, however I was unable to find anything about it in the vehicle code. Normally I wouldn't care but that gaping hole bothers me.

Sooo.... what are the thoughts?

As long as the plate is not blocked, (the issue with some tow balls), you're fine.

Can't have anything covering the rear plate. A Hitch cover that does not obstruct the plate is fine.

Ah that's what it was.. It can't obstruct the plate! Thanks.

Applies mainly to pickups with the hitch ball and plate located on the rear bumper...
