An off-duty California Highway Patrol officer shot and wounded a man he said was stealing items from his Murrieta neighborhood early this morning, authorities said.
The officer, whose name was not released, woke to noise about 3:30 a.m. at his home on Wedgewood Way and went to investigate outside, taking along a gun, said Capt. Dennis Vrooman of the Murrieta Police Department.
The officer confronted a man who was attempting to remove an item from the officer’s neighbor’s yard, Vrooman said. The officer confronted the man and opened fire when he made a move, possibly to retrieve a weapon from the pickup he was driving, Vrooman said. The officer fired several rounds at the man and the pickup, but the man escaped, Vrooman said.
Authorities later found a 26-year-old Moreno Valley man at Riverside County Regional Medical Center who had suffered gunshot wounds to his leg. His damaged pickup found elsewhere, Vrooman said. The man is now in custody, he said.
Vrooman said the officer is assigned to a CHP office in San Diego County but declined to release his name or the name of the man who was shot.

The psychology behind people that do this kind of stuff intrigues me, it really does. The thought process (if any) behind what they do is probably astonishing.
