Today, I was down in Chinatown and witnessed a funeral motorcade in-progress. It's not uncommon to see funeral motorcades with a marching band taking place in Chinatown because there is a funeral home there, across from the SFPD Central Police Station. I've seen hundreds of police escorts serviced by the SFPD but today was different.
I saw two CHP motorcycle cops and one CHP cruiser in the funeral motorcade. The two CHP motors were blocking intersections for the motorcade to get through and the other CHP officer in his patrol car following behind.
I've never, ever seen CHP officers do funeral escorts here in SF until today. I've only seen SFPD and private motorcycle escort people do funeral escorts. I'm just curious, why did they call the CHP to do this funeral escort? Is there a special reason or something? Is it maybe because the deceased was a former CHP officer?
I'm just curious, thanks.

my father-in-law had full chp protocol for his funeral. it was really beautiful. we had escorts from the house to the funeral. as we turned the corner to the church building, the street was perfectly lined with all of the motors and the parking lot was a sea of black and whites. they had the honor guard there, switching out, during the funeral and a commissioner came down, though i can't remember who it was. my husband and i disagree as to who it was and i need to dig out the program to prove him wrong. anyway, the funeral procession was a stream of motors and black and whites. behind the lead motors, we led the procession in my father-in-law's classic pickup with the hearse behind us and family in the middle of the chp sandwich. as we proceeded onto the freeway, it was amazing to see how far in advance the roads had been cleared. i think we wiped out a total of five or six highways and freeways during the procession? it was well-orchestrated, how the vehicles and motors holding the onramps joined the procession after we passed. he also had military honors at the actual burial, where the american flag was given to my husband (also in the navy at the time) and the state flag flown over the capitol was given to my mother-in-law. they had a bagpiper there to play "amazing grace." old hat to some of you who have been to such events, but for someone who had never seen it before and who was so personally involved, it was a breathtakingly beautiful tribute to an equally beautiful man. waxing poetic again, forgive me. man, i miss him.

I know we were helping out SFPD with traffic control today for the SFPD Officer funeral. Our Motors were probably taking intersections so their Motors could ride in formation to honor their own.
