Hello there everyone! I am new to the forum. My husband is currently in the military, but is a CHP hopeful! My question is:
Is there anyone that knows when the next class begins for 2006/2007? If not, Is there any way to know this in advance?
He just began the whole application process and we have a year and a half before he can get into the class. I am trying to put together some sort of timeline so we know when things will be happening for us. Any advice/answers will help! Thanks!

At Border they told us there was a Feb class and an April class. Beyond that not sure.I know that there is a late Feb class as stated, but that I think is only for people already into the process. The best thing would be to contact your local office and talk to a recruiter there.
Good luck to you and your husband!

Every three months a junior class begins at the academy. However, this is not set in stone.
Planning any schedule this far in advance is pretty difficult because there are so many variables. As stated before, there are generally four classes each year; they begin every three months or so. The application process takes about 9-12 months, but that is a big ABOUT. Some cases are completed in six months, some take 18.
My recommendation at this point would be to go through the process, take the written, QAP, and PAT tests. If all goes well, he will then be at the beginning of the background phase. Possibly, that can be completed while he is still in the service. At the beginning of the background investigation, we will have a much better idea of the time line and what class(es) he may be looking at.
Good luck!

dw, do you know if the cadet hiring unit is still doing the accelerated military hiring program? They used to test, interview, and process active duty personnel at the Academy in one weekend. At the end of the weekend they were sent their background packets. Most of them ended up in the Academy within six months. It was pretty cool because they all showed up in uniform. Dozens and dozens of people in a multitude of different uniforms and ranks.
The accelerated military program has been on hold for a few years, prior to the freeze, I believe. I think it was eliminated due to budget issues, but I'm not completely sure.

I figured as much. They did it several times during my first tour but I don't remember it ever taking place from 2003 to 2004. Too bad.

Are you aware that any cadet candidate is allowed to waive hiring up up three times? That means once your husband gets to the end of the hiring process, he is allowed to waive up to three classes and still remin on the list without penalty. Further, I believe that military personnel are actually able to defer to a specific date so they can coordinate an honorable diecharge.
Feel free to write if I can be of further service. Good luck!!

Hello - I want to find out more information on accelerated hiring...can anyone tell me if the academy is going to be like bootcamp lol. I don't want to have to go through another one of those. I will if I have to.

The accelerated hiring was for the paper work process only. This is not going on any more. As far as the academy you start at day one no matter who you are.

No more accelerated testing for military. What you husband can do is complete all of the testing then submit a military waiver. He would complete everything to the end of the background investigation, submit the waiver, then activate the waiver 3-6 months before he is scheduled to discharge. During that time period they will do an update on his background, he can take his medical and psych interview and if the timing is right he could go from military to CHP with only a minimal break without having to use any of the 3 regular waivers. The downside of using a regular waiver is that there is no guarantee that you would be invited to the next class, you go to the back of the line. The military waiver is good until he turns 40 but he has to have taken the written before he is 35. This is an option not allowed for other applicants and a wonderful opportunity for those still in the military.
