OK....brand new thread, and already misinformation has been posted regarding hiring and the Academy. Please remember the rules regarding hiring discussions, specifically:
Any posts related to hiring or the Academy posted in other forums will be deleted and the member posting such may be banned from the site.
We are all very happy for those who have received letters for the Academy, and you are understandably excited. The ban on hiring and Academy related posts was implemented for a reason and still stands. Please don't risk your ability to participate and enjoy CHPForums.

I hope there are absolutely zero that think about quitting once they get there..especially due to how long some of you have been waiting for this opportunity. You quit and you may not get another chance. Help motivate your fellow cadets, especially ones that are down or thinking about quitting. Good luck and I'm sure I'll see a bunch of you in late July or early August down in SLA (The dirty 530).

I second the don't quit post. There are hundreds of people who would give anything to take your place, don't take advantage of a great opportunity. Days go by slow, weeks go by fast. I met some pretty awesome people there, that I still keep in touch with, and its been almost 3 years. And I didn't even graduate! CHP is truly a family, a very loving sometime disfunctional family, but its great knowing if you need help your "family" will be there to help. Good luck to you all!

I would HIGHLY recommend getting some seat time in before the academy, this is a pure muscle memory skill, and getting proper instruction will help you out. Both the SCCA Cal Club and Speedventures offer autocross days at the Autoclub speedway. You can autocross in almost any car, and the skills you learn will translate into being a good driver in every car. Things like car placement, hand placement, car control, visual horizon, and proper throttle and brake technique.

http://speedventures.com/
A great school you can attend that will get you a tone of good instruction by guys that are amazing drivers is Evo Driving School. Even an experienced driver and national champion can learn from these guys. I would have gone this year but a big race Im going to is the weekend before, and Im only on an auto techs salary.
http://www.evoschool.com/
I will be hitting up at least one event before the big race I have in March as I am making a ton of changes to my car this year, if interested I could even offer instruction.

Nah, you mentally prepare for skid pan by watching Doc Hudson teach Lightning McQueen how to handle the dirt track in Cars. "Turn left to go right, do your steerin' with the throttle..." That's all.

You'll ask yourself a 100 times, Did I forget anything? Oh shit my boots! Heart racing! you sigh.....Its only a bad dream! 0500 comes by way of wake up call from the front desk, 30 seconds later the alarm is raging. What the hell have I got myself into? You will console yourself and tell yourself, I can do this! Your appetite is gone, however you force yourself to eat whatever left overs you had from yesterdays drive or last nights dinner. You manage to get all your stuff back into your vehicle. You drive down Reed Ave and see alot of Shaved heads standing out in front of StarBucks! You pull in and look around, which one of these guys are gonna quit?, you ask yourself! (Of course, the one you think will quit, ends up being the Company Commander!) You introduce yourself and comment on how much law enforcement experience you have already and where you worked before today! Of course there are a couple of Military geeks that think they got it all figured out. Someone will bring up, what kinda boots did you buy? This will lead to the inevidible: Did you remember to bring(Whatever)? and that's when the ton of bricks will fall and you begin to pucker! What? We are suppose to have (Whatever)? The pucker factor is huge, but you only have 26 minutes to report to the south parking lot of the Academy. You feverishley try and find someone with an extra (Whatever) and to no avail! You report to the south Academy parking lot and sit in your vehicle, you dont wanna be the first one in line, so you wait for someone else to get out of their vehicle. You see a few people get out of their vehicles and start rummaging through their stuff, this is the sign! You get out of your vehicle and get your stuff, all the time waiting for a group of people to pass by, so you can slip into their group and head to the brown wall by the flowers. As you are walking you are trying to get your bearings, you say "ok, that is North, and that is East". Then you notice, you have more bags and luggage than most people, you ask yourself. Do I really need all this stuff? You get about half way and decide, I dont need this six foot ironing board, 3 sets of boots, X-box 360, so you head back and drop off everything extra that you brought and lighten your load by 30 lbs. You head back to the brown wall by the flowers with only two bags of minimal items. As you get near the wall you see an Officer talking to everyone and you have missed whatever the information he was giving, so you ask someone near you and they don't know either. The Officer tell's everyone to get lined up heal to toe and get ready to meet the Staff Office. There is this long silent waiting period as you stare into the scalp of the person in front of you. Does my head have as much crud in it, as this guys you ask yourself? Then from the parking lot you here it, thump, thump ,thump, heavy breathing, ...............its 0735 and some putz is late and trying to figure out where he is in the line. Of course his place is right in front of you! You move your stuff as fast as possible, but the Staff Office is already out, they see all the movement and you moving your stuff and this guy trying to get in line! Here they come! So much for flying under the radar, the radar just fell and landed on you. Oh and the late guy, Meet your new roomate!

I went to Alameda County SO Civilian EVOC, and though we didn't get as much time behind the wheel as I would have liked, it did teach me some basics to build upon. Plus, the instructor from my class was a former EVOC instructor at CHP academy, and taught the 5 of us who were waiting on invites as he taught at academy.

I just came across this thread. I would disagree. I was an avid autocrosser, class champ etc etc prior to going into the CHP.. and it hurt me if anything.. CHP is going to train you to drive how they want you to drive. Confidence and the ability to follow the EVOC instructors advice is what is going to get you through. I found I had to deprogram myself from years of autocrossing.

Really? A good friend of mine was the Evoc SGT for years, and we even do EVOC training days at the local airport. The stuff they teach, high visual horizion, smooth is fast, weight transfer, hand positioning, and eye placement all translate to driving anything.
If you develop good habits from the start, you will be fast in anything.
What hurt you about having experience, was it bad habits?

My recommendation... ICE CREAM!!! For some reason, I didn't have any ice cream until O.C. Day. It seemed to me, the ice cream abstinence amplified it's soothing and cooling effect after a bit of Ojo-Burny-Burn time... However, at that point I thought to myself, "YOU MORON, THIS IS WAY BETTER THAN GRAVY."

Man I don't know why but I swear my favorite memory at the academy was getting OC last thing of the day on a Friday afternoon right before liberty. Something about getting that over with and then making the almost 2 hour drive from the academy out to Santa Rosa. I remember just hoping that I didn't have some kind of reactivation on the drive out.

I am more excited then ever and still a little nervous. Ice cream ehh the funny part about this site the most "inside info" comes from post like those above. The best part about this site is no b.s. just like at the academy this is what was told needed to be done and that better be damn well done.

I would argue otherwise. I've spent time with shifter karts, Barber Formula cars, trackdays etc and it did nothing but help me in Evoc. The only 'issue' I had was trailbraking on the highspeed track.

Shrug.. dunno what to tell you, I still think it is better to come in with a clean slate. I've raced at thunder hill and prior to that many years of solo II in a Viper. I'm still set on letting the instructors teach you how they want you to drive, esp on the highspeed.
I know of several classmates that kicked ass at all aspects of evoc with no prior training, and know another that had prior racing experience that ended up a retread due to evoc.

I was just speculating because that was the only office I could think of at the time. Regardless I guarantee these cadets/future officers would take any spot they get. From what I know, San Diego is the largest office (# of Officers). I think we're not too far behind them in South L.A. and we have 60 220's in. We have a pigeonhole for transfers and someone as a joke just taped the entire office roster on it.

I was just referring to all the smiling faces in the blog photos. Shouldn't be that happy a month in with no junior or senior class. Haha. It was my bad attempt at humor.

Do these numbers accurately depict the average openings per city or are the numbers tainted since the academy has been closed?
TheGreenHornet

There is no "average opening per city." The numbers for each class are based on the needs of the department and vary from class to class. The majority of the classes usually go to LA or Bay Area offices.

I should rephrase. I know the numbers are based on the needs but are the numbers ususally that swayed towards southern California or are there more than usual since the academy has been closed. I just figured the numbers would be a tad bit closer between LA and Bay areas.

Hard to answer. It depends on the class. Some are very southern heavy and others not do much. But the majority of the classes la offices take a fair share of cadets.

Just think of the place in California you would LEAST like to be, and prepare to be sent there. Then you MIGHT be pleasantly surprised. If you start expecting to go somewhere specific, you will likely be disappointed.

That sounds like the best plan. Ill start making my personal Not So Wish List and hope pray I get assigned to one of those places. Thats a bit off so Ill have plenty of time to get used to the idea.

Anybody have more information on the change of cadets going to each office? I was at the academy on Monday and saw a classroom board with different information, asked a cadet and they said the list was changed. Per the cadet south was getting 19 and my office was changing from two to three. Sorry I don't know we're any other changes are happening

Did you guys/gals already do ride alongs at your respective offices?
I have not yet gone out. I just spoke with a retired officer I work with and asked if he could help me set something up with the local office. Is it recommended that I go through my BI or stick with my plan?
So, here's the deal: For reasons Yada1, Yada2, and Yada3, all of which can be found in the old Hiring Threads, we closed same.
I've made a practice of allowing one thread per class for basic discussion, within the parameters that you all agreed to when signing up for your accounts.
So, yeah. Lets not take the proverbial mile and ruin the party for everyone.
