Assault convictions... My husband has a misdemeanor assault charge from about ten years ago and has had it expunged. Does the interveiw panel/ background people look at things like this on a case-by-case basis?

Being a misdemeanor and 10 years old is a good thing. The background investigators will give it a hard look, as they should, and go from there. Just make sure he is open and honest about it. One of the biggest reasons applicants get disqualified is for lying or being evasive. Ususally what they neglect to admit to or lie about does not get them disqualified. It's the dishonesty that does.
